Related: About this forumMy cat passed today
It wasn't unexpected. She was over 20 years old and had been getting thin. Last night she got really weak and we weren't sure she was going to make it through the night. Twice she fooled us by laying really still but when I picked her up she moved a bit and purred.
This morning I lay in bed reading, posting and watching videos on my iPad with her right beside me occasionally giving her a tummy rub. Eventually I noticed she'd stopped breathing.
I let the dogs say goodbye then took her to be cremated.

(33,643 posts)OTOH it feels all the more empty when they're gone after being a companion that long, so ... I guess it's never optimal.
Sounds like she passed over feeling loved, which is what we all want for all our loved ones, right?

(13,524 posts)farewell to the best companions of our lives, it's - rough
I'm so glad to hear she was still purring, though, right up to her finale!!
Your good good gal was just tuckered out, is all - it sure doesn't sound as if she was suffering mightily, and that's wonderful.

Spouse insisted on getting a kitten last week. I'm calling him by the old cat's name (by accident).

Take care.

(51,590 posts)I know of many animal communicators and they say that is exactly what you should do. I believe in animals going to the other side and people who have had Near Death Experiences often see their pets that already passed. They are very comforted in knowing they will be together again and our pets are part of us on a whole other level. Pets and people are happy, healthy and filled with love while on Earth and after we leave it. Our souls are together in this life and all of our other lives. That gives me comfort and I can't wait to join them. I hope you receive a visit from your cat. Be aware of dreams while in between awake and asleep. That is often a time that we are more able to be at equal levels and "communicate".

(6,915 posts)No words from a stranger is usually comforting, so Ill STFU.
Just know it only hurts because you are so loving. If you were an a**hole it wouldnt hurt a bit.
She knows that. 😻

(11,563 posts)I had our cat die in my arms some years ago, and it was one awful day. The end came within some pretty violent seizures, and I'm so happy for you and your departed that it came so peacefully.

(26,403 posts)You must be devastated, though maybe grateful you were able to be there for her in her time. Cats are strange creatures, but surely they feel comforted by having their people near them at such times.
Many hugs.

The Wizard
(12,545 posts)On January 4, 1993, the cat in this book and the books that preceded it was put to sleep in Kerrville, Texas, by DR. W.H. Hoegemeyer and myself. Cuddles was fourteen years old, a respectable age. She was as close to me as any human being I have ever known.
Cuddles and I spent many years together, both in New York, where I found her as a little kitten on the street in Chinatown, and later on the ranch in Texas. She was always with me, on the table, on the bed, by the fireplace, beside the typewriter, on top of my suitcase when I returned from a trip.
I dug Cuddles' grave with a silver spade, in the little garden by the stream behind the old green trailer where both of us lived in the summertime. Her burial shroud was my old New York sweatshirt and in the grave with her is a can of tuna and a cigar.
A few days ago I received a sympathy note from Bill Hoegemeyer, the veterinarian. It opened with a verse by Irving Townsend: "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle
"
Now as I write this, on a gray winter day by the fireside, I can almost feel her light tread moving from my head and my heart down through my fingertips to the keys of the typewriter. People may surprise you with unexpected kindness. Dogs have a depth of loyalty that we often seem unworthy of. But the love of a cat is a blessing, a privilege in this world.
They say when you die and go to heaven all the dogs and cats you ever owned in your life come running to meet you.
Until that day, rest in peace Cuddles.
