Pets
Related: About this forumI realized something, this morning.
No matter how little sleep I get, what kind of mood I'm in or how blaa I feel when I wake up, I'll soon be laughing at Madoc and Gryff's antics. I look forward to singing to them, first thing every morning. I love looking down the hallway to see one on each side of the archway, waiting for me to walk past so they can jump and pounce - even if the miss their target, most of the time. Madoc has figured out how to play fetch. It's always fun, even if he sometimes wants to play in the middle of the night. I also look forward to being enthusiastically greeted by Mittens, Scooter, Skittish and Spooky, any time I bring them some food. And those special pets for Mittens and Scooter mean the world, to me, because they show I've gain at least some of their trust.
Maybe it's because I haven't felt particularly necessary or needed by anyone, lately, it's good to have these 6 furry bundles of joy to look after and love. They've all taught me a great deal about patience, which is something I've lacked, for years.

(26,315 posts)One of those friends, who has fostered young kittens, for years, told me that raising a kitten from the age I've raised Madoc makes a very strong bond. The kittens emotionally attach to their 'hooman' and tend to be very affectionate and playful. I kind of worried about Gryff, since I have NO idea what his early months were like, but he's taken his cue from Madoc and couldn't be lovelier or more affectionate. Today is the one week anniversary of him joining the family. I might have to celebrate!
It always cracks me up when people say cats are aloof and just see people as servants who feeds them. Madoc actually reaches up and pats my face when he wants a nuzzle. Gryff doesn't ask, he just goes for it.

(31,118 posts)Youve taken very good care of these babies. When I was a little girl kittens would just show up, it was a rural area back then. we might get them rabies shots, otherwise they were pretty much on their own. My mom tolerated them because she hated mice. Of course now I spoil them.

I share your adventures with my little rescue as he cuddles on my lap. Thank 6ou for these precious moments

(1,792 posts)My wife takes care of 2 of the indoor cats.
The 4 in the garage go out at 7:00 pm or so and come back in at 5:30 am to eat and nap.
Their mama lives in the back bedroom with a cat tree and an air conditioned house. She gets outside play a few hours daily. sometimes as much as 6 hours, but she needs my supervision as she attacks all of the outdoor cats. Be cause of her need for my supervision, I have spent 2-6 hours daily outside fixing my yard. I have made massive changes to it and my health has gotten better
The 12 outside have 3 cat trees under a canopy, and 10 wooden shelters that someone from a community cat care brought over.
I feed and clean litter boxes starting at 5:30 at am done in 20 minutes or so. I spend about an hour per day in the garage petting and grooming the 4 in the garage.
All of the cats eat Fancy Feast, the outdoor ones eating the soft food only twice a week. I just ordered another $120 worth of soft food last night and am going out for hard food later this morning. They all seem to like the Friskies Seafood Sensations so I will buy 60 lbs of that for now.
I think this is some of the best years I've ever lived, and that the 4 have saved my sanity. I am retired so I can spend lots of time with them.

(21,728 posts)We feed them and provide shelter and health care. In return, we learn so much from them about living.

They grow old, of course, really old in many cases. Twelve of them, altogether, in my seventy-one years.
Right now I'm down to one.
She's the delight of my age: a big black beauty, with a serene personality. Nothing really bothers her, she's always happy to see me.
In many ways, she's better than most of the humans I know.
