Life with a Great Pyrenees

Lupé sat outside in the snow. It was 25 below. She sat just staring at the house. Finally, a neighbor called Tim, the guardian of Lupé, and expressed concern about a dog out in that temperature and told him the dog must be depressed.

“Nope,” Tim replied, “He’s just a Great Pyrenees.”

I had called Tim Holte, a high school friend, because he was an experienced Great Pyrenees guardian. He also happens to be an amazing photographer who I follow on Facebook. But what caught my attention was his Great Pyrenees was usually with him as he shot pictures of the Lake Michigan coast. And the Pyrenees would be off-leash.

This confused me. The times we’ve had Toby, our Great Pyrenees, off-leash or when he’s escaped, he was gone and out of sight in a heartbeat.

For example, we were working with Toby and Ryan Tyson, our wonderful trainer…..

Are you aware that AndyS is taking care of a GP? He has some posts about her in this group. I hope he'll see your thread too!

a boy and his Great Pyrenese, who had many close calls while trying to get home (or something) by crossing the Alps (I think).

In many episodes, people were terrified of Belle, whom they called a big white monster.

Its very distinctive.

All 3 of ours were rescues (Bear, Duke, and Chloe), and are between the ages of 10 and 12 now. Really hard to see them age. They still love to go out and lay in snow or on cold, hard ground, but its bad for their arthritis.

Duke came from an abusive situation, and was very slow to trust us. We had to go back and make all of our perimeter fencing 6', as he was always escaping (nothing like tripping through dark woods with a flashlight). Thankfully, he finally figured out this was a pretty good place to be.

They are always on patrol when outside, and yes, bark a lot. They have to let us know the garbageman is stealing our garbage again, or that deer are trying to invade. They are also quite territorial. A stray cat or groundhog best beware.

The article mentions getting many of them from Kentucky. They are quite prevalent here, mostly because of the large Amish population who use them for guarding livestock. Unfortunately, many have also become puppy mills.

You also have to be prepared to do a lot of grooming. They have major undercoats. Also be prepared to do much loving, and be loved.

I love hearing about your Pyrs.

We looked at Pyr puppies many years ago but ended up with a different dog.

They certainly seem to have strong personalities and they are so beautiful.

She patrols the yard constantly for invaders

She barks at anyone she sees outside, whether it’s the neighbor taking her puppy outside for a potty trip or a person walking from their car to the apartment building across the street.mail carrier, garbage collectors, etc. etc. No fence jumping, thank goodness.

Here she is patrolling the perimeter of our yard….

Especially those in your beautiful flower garden & lying next to that gorgeous Christmas tree.

Bet they love snow, like our big 120lb yellow girl did.

to you, my buddy.

Alexander (aka Big Boy). He is wonderful, stubborn, barks lots, keeps us safe from large white trucks, UPS, Mail trucks, garbage trucks, leaf blowers, Amazon deliveries, deer, men with beards, etc. I can truthfully say that we are safe from all of the above. He takes his job seriously and for that we love him. He is three years old and gorgeous. We adopted him at seven months. It took awhile but now he knows he is loved and we love him in return. He shares the house with with two cats (Millie and PufMan), a PitBull/German Shepherd/White Swiss Shepherd mix named Scout (smart and sweet). We consider ourselves lucky to have all of them as our best friends. While I type, Alexander just made sure the UPS truck did not attack the house. He deserves a promotion.
