The old All Creatures Great and Small TV series is streaming on Netflix.

It is hokey, but I loved the books and the animal interactions are interesting. They drink and drive like crazy too! The housekeeper gave Herriot a shot of cocaine brandy in his hot breakfast tea when he came in from a particularly cold early morning call in the last segment I watched. I guess it was a different time! At any rate, it is a cute series if you love animals.

7. Love the show, couldn't live there though

Even in dedicated so-called free speech areas, Lizzie the Hun will throw you in jail if you so much as hold up a sign reading "Free Ireland". Well, I do have to admit that's the official Sinn Fein slogan. For me it would be like throwing gasoline on a fire.

Needless to say, my favorite Wings/McCartney song was "Give Ireland Back to the Irish", once banned in England. I'm rather fond of individual Brits, but don't care for their government. My ancestors not too far back were guests of that state, and I can't work up the least sympathy for it.

4. I love both the show and the books.

On one of my trips to the UK I did a day trip to Thirsk which is where Alf Wight (aka James Herriott lived. You can visit his home and a museum dedicated to the show that is out back. It was a long day but well worth if for All Creatures Great and Small fans.

6. The strange thing is,

Cocaine first became medically recommended as a cure for heroin addiction. Andean peoples chewed coca leaves for energy and it must be a lot less addictive taken that way. Anyhow, more 'advanced' civilizations had to abuse it, of course. I've heard it's harder to kick than heroin.

Back to the show: thanks for the news. I loved the books too. Hopefully they'll still be available when I start Netflix soon. I would've already but a certain little mutt joined our pack, and her initial vet care will take care of any spare change for awhile. Then there's the major home rehab that will probably take another decade to finish. Always something, it seems.

8. My mom was a huge fan

I remember, very vaguely, watching an episode or two when I was very young. I may have to take in some episodes but I am still watching the British version of Shameless like crazy.

9. Loved the episode with Mrs. Pumphrey's flatulent dog.

This was one of the later episodes when Mrs. Pumphrey got a new dog (a boxer, I think) which caused huge problems for her because the dog farted constantly. It was determined to be genetic, and she was told that he would always be that way. So she had a party at her grand estate one day, and the dog snuck into the house and hid under one of the white linen-covered tables, where he proceeded to fill the room with gas. The camera went from face to face in the room full of guests as each one (including the priest) very subtly appeared to detect the foul odor and suspect the person he was talking to. It was very funny. The dog ended up being adopted by a man who had lost his sense of smell, so all was well. I miss that show, so it's good to hear that it's on Netflix.

10. I have re-watched the entire series on Netflix

Before you think, "wow that's a lot of couch potato time!", I watched them while on my exercise bike.
