U.S. Gen Winfield Scott began the forced removal of the Cherokee Indians from GA, AL, & TN, and their detention in forts built for that purpose. Implementing the Treaty of New Echota, signed by a few members of the tribe relinquishing their lands for a payment of $5 million, under orders from President Martin VanBuren. http://bit.ly/11d7XPj
