Killings by Utah police outpacing gang, drug, child-abuse homicides

In the past five years, more Utahns have been killed by police than by gang members.

Or drug dealers. Or from child abuse.

And so far this year, deadly force by police has claimed more lives ó 13, including a Saturday shooting in South Jordan ó than has violence between spouses and dating partners.

As the tally of fatal police shootings rises, law enforcement watchdogs say it is time to treat deadly force as a potentially serious public safety problem.

"The numbers reflect that there could be an issue, and itís going to take a deeper understanding of these shootings," said Chris Gebhardt, a former police lieutenant and sergeant who served in Washington, D.C., and in Utah, including six years on SWAT teams and several training duties. "It definitely canít be written off as citizen groups being upset with law enforcement."

When are our "leaders" going to treat this as the major-and-escalating civil rights issue that it is?

1. The mind set in Utah is Right is Might

and never question authority. Surprised the Trib would run a piece negative to the local establishment. BTW,racism runs rampant in Utah. Starts at the top and trickles down threw every Agency and Governmental organization.

2. I'm pretty sure the problem is not specific to Utah

It's not as easy as you may suppose, to get hard numbers on exactly how many people police in this country kill.

3. LEO's are all scared witless

All the'y have to do is say they were frightened in the least and they are excused and celebrated for out and out cowardice. Our whole country is a total military police state. Not to diminish Utah's surprisingly high numbers. They are authoritarian, Later Day Saint, Republican, John Birtchers.

Look how fast Ferguson has turned the National Guard on ' The People',.... even in anticipation of a possible reaction.
