Employee shot and killed in W. Kensington store

Updated at 11:54 PM today
By DANN CUELLAR

WEST KENSINGTON - January 23, 2012 (WPVI) -- Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal shooting at a grocery store in West Kensington Monday night.

Police have not identified the victim, but her friends in the neighborhood are identifying her as 29-year-old Reina Aguirre.

---------

"This doesn't appear to be a robbery. It appears this male entered the store with the intent of shooting this female who was working behind the counter," Small said.

Although police have not established a motive, some neighbors say she had been having problems with drug dealers on the block.

Nutter on violence: 'Enough is enough'
January 17, 2012|By Troy Graham, Inquirer Staff Writer

Mayor Nutter spent Monday attending events to commemorate the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his teachings of peace and nonviolence - a legacy overshadowed in Philadelphia by the recent surge in killings on the city's streets.

The mayor's last stop of the day was a packed Kensington church, where he spoke to a congregation that included about a dozen family members mourning the young victims of a quadruple shooting last week.

He talked to them in often hushed tones about their loss, and about his own frustration and struggle with the deaths.

"I'm still in pain," he said. "I'm not afraid to admit it."

Do you think big city mayors have legitimate concerns about guns being illegally trafficked into their cities? Do you think this is a national concern? How firm are you set in your beliefs? Do you live in an urban, suburban, or rural neighborhood? How would you describe your neighborhood economically i.e. upper, middle, lower?

1. If city mayors

could protect their citizens from criminals they wouldn't have to worry about guns.

Crime, poverty, and social injustice are national concerns.

I live in a rural area near an affluent community.

I haven't seen a cogent argument for more firearms regulation yet.

Maybe Philly should pass some more laws and Mr Mayor could make a few more speeches.

That should take care of the problem.

and we don't seem to have any problem keeping our firearms under control...

And I can hit a golf ball to 3 people in three different homes I know sell pills and/or pot.

Maybe mayors need to set up check points into their cities and search vehicles for several different illegal items.

Why can't people in cities be trusted with their 2A rights?

Why is it that the states that are exporting the guns don't have the crime problems that the places that are importing them have?

Clearly the states where the guns are originating from don't have any lack of firearms to use to commit crimes. So why is it that they don't have the crime problems whereas the places they are imported to do?

Why is it that the people who are importing firearms are so desperate to use them in crime, while the people who have plenty to export don't?

Dear friends of mine (husband/wife) just moved from their home in the city to a rural area of the county directly north of us. He has a number of pistols and a 12 gauge, but he's a perfect example of a person who could use an "assault weapon". Approaching senior status with a prosthetic leg and law enforcement virtually non-existent, myself and others have suggested that he get his hands on a bit more firepower.

Do you think big city mayors have legitimate concerns about guns being illegally trafficked into their cities? Yes

Do you think this is a national concern? Yes, that's why we have the ATF.

How firm are you set in your beliefs? All of my life lessons have brought me to my current belief system.

Do you live in an urban, suburban, or rural neighborhood? Currently I am in the suburbs. In my life I have however lived in all of the above. I have been homeless, lived in a motel, lived in project housing, lived on a farm and lived in the burbs.

How would you describe your neighborhood economically i.e. upper, middle, lower? Currently upper/middle.

Edit: Nor have you demonstrated what percentages of gun-crimes are commited with out-of-state guns. More fail.

To come to that conclusion, you have to presuppose that it's a figure that really truly matters in the context of *real* lives.

I think coming to an accurate statistical analysis of such a question is probably much more difficult than you suppose.

We don't know. What I implied is that there is an ongoing problem with criminal gun violence in urban areas and that many believe interstate gun trafficking has an effect.

easier and far cheaper than actually improving the city police force so as to stop crime in their cities. Blaming others makes the majors look like they are actually doing something to combat crime.

The victim in the first story was identified as Rosemary Fernandez-Rivera.

The police have made 4 arrests in the case. It would appear that she was specifically targeted because she was a witness to a murder.
