From Daily Kos: Guns in Schools plan runs afoul of insurance industry.

There is something both odd and slightly satisfying in the newest roadblock facing conservative plans to put more guns in schools. Private insurance companies want no part of it:

As more schools consider arming their employees, some districts are encountering a daunting economic hurdle: insurance carriers threatening to raise their premiums or revoke coverage entirely. […]
[A]lready, EMC Insurance Companies, the liability insurance provider for about 90 percent of Kansas school districts, has sent a letter to its agents saying that schools permitting employees to carry concealed handguns would be declined coverage.

“We are making this underwriting decision simply to protect the financial security of our company,” the letter said.

security issues should be based on the recommendations, and implemented by, professionals in that area. I have not seen any argument, let alone a legitimate argument, by professionals. All of the arguments against I have seen are emotional rants from pundits and ideologues.

2. In looking at threads on this in GD I had a question, and I don't know the answer:

are schools' insurance companies liable to any extent for the costs incurred by an outsider attack on a school? In the coverage of Sandy Hook, for example, I've seen references to charities and donations to aid the victims, but I don't recall seeing any mention of whether or not the school's insurance was paying anything out...

3. If they are, the actuaries consider this less of a risk than arming school employees.

And the actuaries should know!

6. Maybe that's why they don't charge gun owners extra for premiums?

You're right, the actuaries are very careful to evaluate risk and charge for anything they can find and support with facts. Obviously they don't consider gun owners an extra ordinary risk, since they never even ask if you own or store guns in your home when you buy a policy.

Nothing for homeowners, nothing extra for liability either.

Funny how that works.

7. Your insurance isn't going to cover you when you're sued for negligent use of your gun.

And on your homeowners' insurance, it just depends on what coverage you want. Check your policy coverage.

Funny how that works, eh?

9. They just asked me for the total estimated value of my collection

And if I ever use one negligently, I'll have bigger things to be concerned about than my coverage.

In the meantime they are covered.

Ask an adult, I'm sure they'll explain how insurance works and how things actually considered hazardous or a risk of any credibility requires an extra premium. Private pilots, certain cars or motorcycles but never guns, as far as the "charge for everything you can insurance industry", they are a non issue as far as risk goes.

But you'll have to excuse me now, we're getting ready to get concealed carry in Illinois starting tomorrow, one way or another.

How could that possibly happen in a deep blue state without a single GOP in any major state office?

10. For large/high value collections they usually ask you to supply an evaluators list......

If you've only got a few thousand dollars worth, it's covered under your homeowner's cap.

But now we aren't talking about home owner theft policies when we're discussing school liability policies....... are we?

But I think you know that by now.

Three Kansas community colleges have created an insurance consortium after their insurance company increased rates and said it wouldn’t insure the schools if they allowed concealed-carry in public buildings.

Independence Community College board of trustees voted last week to join Coffeyville and Neosho community colleges in an effort to lower rates and explore a new Kansas law that loosens restrictions on carrying concealed weapons into public buildings.

You may or may not agree with their reason for doing so, but I would like to see more non profit insurance systems in place. I don't know if you agree with the ends, but can we agree on the means?
