Ready ... aim ... point ... talk

Jerome M. Hauer, Gov. Andrew Cuomo's director of homeland security, took out his handgun and used the laser sighting device attached to the barrel as a pointer in a presentation to a foreign delegation, according to public officials. It happened Oct. 24 in Albany at the highly secure state emergency operations center below State Police headquarters.

These officials, one of whom claimed to be an eyewitness, said that three Swedish emergency managers in the delegation were rattled when the gun's laser tracked across one of their heads before Hauer found the map of New York, at which he wanted to point.

Hauer, commissioner of the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, was disabled by a stroke a few years ago and can be unsteady. He isn't a law enforcement official. He carries the loaded 9-millimeter Glock in a holster into state buildings, an apparent violation of state law barring state employees from bringing weapons to the workplace, several witnesses say.

The incident with the Swedish delegation occurred during a two-hour briefing at the operations center concerning the state's response to Superstorm Sandy, according to one of the officials.

In such states the rich and privileged often find it far easier to get a concealed carry permit than the average Joe. It's even more difficult for the average Joe to get a carry permit in New York City which Jerome Hauer also has. Unfortunately it also appears that the rich and famous and influential can get away with unsafely handling their firearms and displaying them recklessly. as it looks unlikely that Hauer will be disciplined for his actions.

If I were at a meeting in Florida and whipped out my legally concealed handgun to use its laser as a pointer, I would not only get fired from my job but would also be arrested for brandishing a weapon. I would most likely lose my carry permit even I were a member of the elite. Hell, I could lose my license to carry by merely carrying it into my county courthouse.

Obviously Hauer doesn't understand the concept of muzzle discipline and that is a kind way to criticize his actions.

It appears Gov. Cuomo is a strong supporter of gun control laws unless it involves members of his administration. Why does this not surprise me?

I told him he couldn't use it in their matches but I'm surprised at the quality.

I'd put it on a 22 and blast away....for a cheap Chinese piece of junk.

I did have to take it apart and work on the switch contacts but it's working like a champ now... not much vertical adjustment that's for sure.
