Sales of guns and ammo are losing steam after a frenzied run-up sparked by fears of greater restrictions in the wake of the Newtown shooting and other massacres.
Background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, considered to be the most accurate means of tracking gun sales, plunged by a third in January compared to the year before. There were about 1.66 million background checks last month, and nearly 2.5 million in January the year before.
In the past two years, gun shop owners and consumers have complained of ammunition shortages and a dearth in fast-selling semiautomatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, even as manufacturing ramped up.

(18,770 posts)Fleet Farm had 9mm in. I've been wanting to go to the range but my reloading equipment is currently packed away and factory ammo has been impossible to find.
Now I may be able to go this week. Not today as we are getting a nice load of fresh snow...

(579 posts)and prices are reasonable, the missus and I are going out shooting today, weather here is supposed to be clear, sunny, 75 degrees, light breeze.

(3,249 posts)My son and I spent a couple hours on the range. I was shooting suppressed .22LR (I wish the darn .22LR ammo would start showing up at a decent price.) My son was shooting his damn 300 Weatherby Magnum right next to me. After getting used to the nice, quiet .22's, every time he fired a shot it just about blew me off the bench!
But it was a beautiful day here in Central Texas. A little windier than I like for target shooting, but still, a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon with my son.

(4,758 posts)I exclusively shoot heavier bullets (my lone 223 has a 1/9" barrel) so that's rarely an issue to get, but man, that brass was a wise purchase.
Shame I've lived in NYC for almost three years and gotten a total of about an hours' range time a year..

(7,720 posts)Last August they had a sale on it and turned out to be new-old stock. It was made in Czechoslovakia in 1982. It was obviously made for export to the U.S. because the box was labeled all in English. I don't know if it has been stored away somewhere in the U.S. for 31 years or not. The stuff looked like it could foul up a gun pretty good. It's difficult enough the breakdown and put back together my Ruger MkII, so I did not buy any.
Don't forget there's a snow emergency for tonight and tomorrow.

(18,770 posts)And not a 22 lr to be seen...
Otherwise they were well stocked on rifle calibers; pretty good on pistol if you want FMJ.
I'm in for the night and only short trips tomorrow. 4wd is great unless all wheels start sliding. Roads are mostlyok but I did find icy spots.

(7,720 posts)I worked from home today but I don't think the traffic was as bad as could have been because of the Presidents Day holiday for government workers.
I was at the 35W and lexington store.
They were hauling out bricks of blazer 22 lr
For $19.99 / 500. I got one, and watched another 11 go through the checkout line as i waited for a price check on an iron skillet. It was the first i had seen on the shelf there in over a year.

(10,164 posts)When stocks of guns and ammunition became scant, the phenomenon kind of fed on itself. Now that it's apparent that a whole bunch of new restrictions and bans weren't going to happen, the market's returning to normal.
Except for trying to get your hands on .22LR at a reasonable price...

(18,770 posts)Things should level out, barring knee jerk reactions to stimulate the market again.

(5,330 posts)Hopefully ammo prices will start coming down soon as well.

(18,318 posts)Were 110 gr. Hollow points made esp. for lever actions (Marlin?) which fire the handgun stuff. I'm in the market for a .22 rifle, but have held off due to ammo shortage. I need to dial-in the .270 deer rifle, and practice with the Police Service Six. Some nice weather settling in.

(15,396 posts)Last year I picked up a 45 and 9.
This year I can't get a finger on what I want...It really comes down to what I run across first at the price I want to pay.
I need another fullsized 9 and 45, maybe even a 40 if I can ditch my 229. If 22 would ever show up I'd like a 22/45 lite...
Right now no long guns unless I decide on another AR in 6.8 to hunt with. Or maybe just a 6.8 upper...
That being said it sure is nice being able to pick up ammo every trip out now.
