Orting homeowner shot dead with own gun during burglary

ORTING, Wash. - A homeowner was shot and killed in his front yard with his own shotgun after he interrupted a burglary in his garage in the Pierce County town of Orting.

The victim, identified as Michael Compton, 53, was found at about 3:15 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Ford Lane SW in Orting after his wife went looking for him.

Police believe he interrupted a burglary in his garage, perhaps a gas theft, and it turned deadly when his own shotgun was turned against him.

it does have several drawbacks.

One is the fact that the long barrel is easy to grab if you are close enough and have the guts to do so. Once you have grabbed the barrel it doesn't take a lot of skill to take the weapon away from its owner. (Of course it is very wise not to be directly in front of the shotgun when you grab the barrel.)

But... You need a weapon that is designed to do the job.

You can get legal shorter barrels the Rem 11-87, 1100, or 870, and the mossberg 500 for very reasonable prices. By just changing the barrels you can go from a shotgun for hunting or shooting clays to a very effective home defense weapon. Please practice enough so you know your weapon well.
As always safe storage and all of the ten commandments of gun safety apply.

If the threat is enough to have a firearm out then it's time to protect your life not jack your jaw.

operating a drug den? Or is the standard: anyone who successfully defends themselves is a drug dealer but anyone harmed by their own weapon is an innocent who would have been better off having the government disarm them.
