My temporary neighborhood's in shock right now.

I'm in Colorado on a trip to retrieve my travel trailer I had stored here a couple years ago, enjoy some vacation, and sort out inheritance items from the demise of my parents this last year.
The RV park manager, who seemed a level-headed character to me albeit he sort of gave me impression of being the pseudo-tea party sort... I had just spoken with about 8 p.m., just casual, friendly conversation about my next job contract.
I was startled out of the beginnings of sleep about 11 p.m. by gunfire I wasn't sure could have been some idiot with firecrackers. But subsequent screams and walking out my door to see a woman and a dog bloody and dead outside the manager's RV soon snapped me out of any notion that it was going to be a restful night. Police and the local SWAT team arrived. He'd locked himself in his R.V., where now I understand he went onto facebook and posted "I just killed my wife and my dog, SWAT team is here now to kill me."
Police evacuated us all to a local hotel conference room stocked with coffee and donuts.
About 3 a.m. the attempt to gas him out of his R.V. resulted in a gun battle to his demise.

Even some you'd never expect to snap and do something unbelievably reprehensible make me worry even more about the nutjob sort who are armed and have anti-government (and one I know of equally anti-liberal) vendettas.

So much for a quiet vacation trip to tie up some loose ends.

That the armed and disenfranchised will continue to snap, maim, and murder...

So sorry you and others went through this. And may the souls of his poor wife and pooch find some rest...

On edit: According to your linked article, the dog is actually expected to survive the mayhem. May the "orphaned" hound find a gentle new home...

When I saw the not-moving bloody mess of fur I assumed dog was a gonner too. If I weren't traveling I'd consider adopting.

As bad as I feel for the wife, I am happy the dog lived. Poor doggie.

Yeah, shitty way to start a “vacation”. Hope it gets better.

Condolences on the loss of your parents.

I've never been so close to such a horrible incident (nobody got shot during the bank robbery that happened when I was a teller). That must have been horrific in every way possible! Please try to get some peace after going through that.

I feel sorry for all involved. What a tragedy. People get so troubled and so carried away by anger and despair. Very sad.

There's a really nice state park outside of Pueblo if you don't feel like staying where you are. We're fulltimers and stayed in the Pueblo park last summer.

Which state park? There's more than one outside Pueblo. I've lived in Canon City for 25+ years. I grew up in Southern Colorado. Not to mention that's just one of a 100 campgrounds around here. I'd rather stay up by the Royal Gorge than have a view of the local Wal-Mart. That campground/travel trailer park is right across Highway 50 from Wal-Mart. I live less than a mile from there. Canon City is not violent or dangerous. The biggest business in town is prisons. Lots of military people live in this area because of Fort Carson and all the other bases around here. And there are a shit ton of cops in this town. I mean seriously because of the prisons. They even busted out their shiny new toys for that standoff. The Mobile Command Center is new, that might have even been the first time they used it. They just got a MRAP as well. Just for reference, Canon City has a population of about 25,000.
