(15,396 posts)For every 15yo that shoots a criminal dead during a home invasion it builds on that number. I know at 15 I always kept a 16ga loaded with 00...the 22 was second up on the rack and my 35 on top. Those were my main 3 hunting firearms as a child.
But in those days were I lived every kid had his own "trophy" rack in his room. Those were the good ole days.

(15,396 posts)I have young children 7&9....all my firearms are locked up unless they're on my person or we're in the process of using them.
However.com I do believe if you have "normal & stable" children of an age to where they know firearm safety having access to a 22 isn't that bad of an idea.
Of course you also have to be aware of other children that may visit your home....any given day I may have 5 or 6 different children inside my home having open access no matter what age won't probably happen at my home. It's pretty well document that visiting kids will steal firearms sometimes.
"I have young children 7&9....all my firearms are locked up unless they're on my person or we're in the process of using them."
What if a crazed crook breaks in and the 7&9 year old can't get to a gun?
It is all so well documented that if a home is well secured with an alarm system and fortified doors and windows, most intruders will move on to a less secure home.

(15,396 posts)But then again, I don't go around without my sidearm that much at home. I have normal doors and windows and 8 legs worth of alarm system.
Hopefully if all goes well I'll neutralize the threat before they are harmed.

(2,038 posts)...that a "well secured home" doesn't pose much more of a defense to forced entry than most others. My front door is solid old-growth oak and nearly 2 inches thick, secured with a heavy duty deadbolt through a reinforced strike plate in the frame with 4" screws. I know I could kick that door in with barely a minute more delay than if it was the usual shoddily installed doors on most newly constructed homes. Also, "most intruders" does not mean all intruders so really your point holds no water.

(12,072 posts)It was kept on the gun rack on the wall. I had access to it any time I wanted to, and often went hunting alone using that shotgun.

(16,038 posts)I did the same thing...even down to the gun rack. I learned about success and failure, life and death, the weather, self reliance, the thought pattern of animals, where my food came from, gave me hours of time to think (something which is sorely lacking in most kid's lives), and hours of relatively safe fun. I cleaned everything I killed and my mom cooked it. Sometimes I would not shoot at something because I didn't feel like cleaning it..(usually a squirrel, they're a bitch to skin)..I never shot anything I didn't eat..except a beaver I shot because the land owner asked me to to keep it from damming the creek..we ate one meal off of it and threw the rest out (sold the hide for $5..could have gotten $30 if I had known how to skin the animal for hide, which I then read up on)... The absolute best days of my life.. along with hunting with my dad.
