(17,502 posts)someone making a partly false 911 call has what to do with us? What's your point?
fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)I posted the article to see what you and others think about it.
You've stated you are confused and question what it has to do with you.
Perhaps nothing.
If story or post doesn't interest you, fine....move on.
Here's what I think of the article:
Take all crime seriously regardless of whether a gun is involved.
Don't say you are being threatened with a gun when you are not.
Don't use a gun when it doesn't warrant being used.
Take personal responsibility for your words and/or actions (applies to all....victim, criminal and cops).

(17,502 posts)I agree with all four points. Normally cop shootings don't show up here unless Starbucks is mentioned.
fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)...not everything has to be a fight.
As for Starbucks...it could be a 7-11, in some places.....I think cOps like them more for the donuts. LOL.
sarisataka
(18,663 posts)I agree with all four of your points.
I would add advice:
-don't run from the police, it gets them excited
-when the nice officer tells you to keep your hands where he can see them, KEEP YOUR HANDS WHERE HE CAN SEE THEM
-if you decide to fib to the police about what happened, don't bitch about karma
I would agree with the calls for full investigations. From the article it makes it sound like the police were trigger happy but two officers from two different angle seemed to think the youth was going for a weapon. As with civilians, the officers should be presumed innocent but investigated if there is a racial angle. With holding the ethnicity of the officers makes me suspect there is a possibility.

(7,042 posts)That's true.

(7,042 posts)One of the regular gun advocates argued that a 911 operator isn't really the police.
They argued that as a reason to defend the Florida 'stand your ground' gun stalker who didn't follow the 911 operators instructions to stop pursuing the hooded kid eventually killed.
PavePusher
(15,374 posts)Many (perhaps most?) places, 911 operators are NOT officers. Even if they are, orders given over a phone, by someone not an on-scene observer, are not likely to be legally binding, even if the advice given is good.
Is there a recording that has any cease/desist order on it? All I've heard is the "we don't need you to do that" comment. Not an order in any way. Stupid of Z to ignore it, agreed.

(7,042 posts)...since this board is now unlocked, I can respond to your question about ...........GUNS (certainly it couldn't possibly be you who thought otherwise and petitioned to have this board locked).
shadowrider
(4,941 posts)and the statement "we don't need you to do that" was not an order but a suggestion. Available evidence suggests Zimmerman lost sight of Martin and was returning to his truck so he didn't do what he was told he didn't need to do. Everything after that is fuzzy.
Note I said "suggests". No one online was there. I keep my mind open till the facts (many of which won't be known until trial (if there is one)).
fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)911 operators are officers in some places.
The fact that no one was there (as you acknowledge) is EXACTLY what is wrong with stand your ground laws. It's a one sided story.
Tell me is Martin going to be given the opportunity to testify at this trial you seem to think may not happen?
shadowrider
(4,941 posts)is the reason SYG laws ARE needed.
No harm, no foul.
fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)....thank goodness this board is unlocked so we can express our opinion about guns and gun laws.
SYG laws presume the force is justifiable when it may not be.

(5,412 posts)Often the 911 dispatchers are not police officers, and in many places, Sanford being one, you are not legally obligated to follow their instructions.
It is still illegal to make false reports of crime to the police through 911.

The bad guy didn't say he had a gun. The crime victim falsely claimed his assailant had a gun.

fightthegoodfightnow
(7,042 posts)According to You. LOL.
So predictable. You say back to the RKBAs and then nothing about the RKBAs -just some childish, sarcastic comment about the moderator. Good luck with that approach.
I've had two threads locked (and latter unlocked) and you seem to think he has a bias against your point of view. Too funny.
I think there is a right to keep and bear arms but that right is not absolute and it comes with responsibilities. You may disagree. Keep your points to that rather than who you dislike.

(7,042 posts)Statement of Purpose
Discuss gun control laws, the Second Amendment, the use of firearms for self-defense, and the use of firearms to commit crime and violence.
-----that is EXACTLY what this post is about.....
The actions of a crime victim who falsely accused his attacker of having a gun to the police.
The necessity of law enforcement to employ deadly force to stop him using a gun.
The assailant not having a gun to defend himself (irony of ironies).
Guns...guns...guns.
Violence and crime all the way around by any fair and reasonable person.
