A Run on Guns is Making Investors Happy

Like them or hate them, one cannot argue that an investment in guns and the companies that manufacture them are making investors very happy. To validate the claim, consider the following two companies and their current stock prices.

(snip)

The final issue for investors is to determine what is driving this demand and how long it will last. After analyzing the financial reports for both RGR and SWHC, speaking with retail outlets, and examining news and media publications, it seems there are four reason that are in play which are feeding people's demand. These are:

1. The perception that new and highly restrictive gun laws will soon be introduced by the government.

2. The rise in highly popular reality television shows that revolve around the manufacture, usage, and competitive sports using firearms.

3. A general fear of civil unrest sparked by economic uncertainty and recent events from overseas.

4. The rise in popular reality television shows that revolve around "Doomsday" preparations.

I don't know that I can agree with #1; Obama's administration hasn't made any overt moves to signal new, restrictive gun laws. #2 and #4 I can see. I'm not sure about #3. Maybe some people are driven by economic uncertainty unrest and foreign tensions. But I really haven't noticed a crime upsurge during this recession.

All that said, a company with strong sales and solid earnings potential can often be a good investment. I don't buy individual stocks, but if I did... Thoughts?

9. Well, our President did campaign in 2008 on banning very popular firearms.

One's record and stated agenda are not easily forgotten.

More over, when Sarah Brady said that the White House was working on gun control regulation under the radar and she was not called out as a liar by the administration, anxieties grew.

On March 30, the 30th anniversary of the assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan, Jim Brady, who sustained a debilitating head wound in the attack, and his wife, Sarah, came to Capitol Hill to push for a ban on the controversial “large magazines.” Brady, for whom the law requiring background checks on handgun purchasers is named, then met with White House press secretary Jay Carney. During the meeting, President Obama dropped in and, according to Sarah Brady, brought up the issue of gun control, “to fill us in that it was very much on his agenda,” she said.

“I just want you to know that we are working on it,” Brady recalled the president telling them. “We have to go through a few processes, but under the radar.”

In the meeting, she said, Obama discussed how records get into the system and what can be done about firearms retailers. Her husband specifically brought up the proposed ban on large magazine clips, and she noted that even former vice president Dick Cheney had suggested that some restrictions on the clips might make sense.

“He just laughed,” Sarah Brady said approvingly of the president. Both she and her husband, she emphasized, had absolute confidence that the president was committed to regulation.

But it is true that he has not been vocal about continuing his anti-RKBA record or agenda. He has also signed a law which had a pro-gun rider attached to it. More over, unlike many gun control advocates here and elsewhere, he has not exploited deaths committed by criminals to keep guns out of the hands of law abiding residents.

I'm wondering if our Pres. laughed because he realized that Cheney was dangling juicy bait in front of Democrats. Needless to say, Mrs. Brady will never figure this one out.

I do fear that President Obama might act against firearms in his second term, but I am tending to doubt it now that it has been removed from the Democratic party platform.

I was pretty much disgusted with President Obama after he signed the NDAA but after his speech on Tuesday I am at least inspired by what he said. I wish he had not waited so long to say it, though.
