Incumbent Debra Maggart is running against Courtney Rogers. Rogers' campaign has gotten a $100,000 boost from the NRA. On Wednesday, a group of citizens took out a full page ad in the paper telling the NRA to stay out of Sumner County.
"The billboards are absurd," said Mike Fussell. Fussell believes that the NRA has been wasting their time and money attacking Debra Maggart.
"They have plenty to do in Washington, why are they down in Sumner Co," he asked.

So the NRA gave $100,000 to her opponent and that's a bad thing?
Boy, you gun control guys have some strange views for DU.

(12,072 posts)She was the Republican whip and did not allow a popular NRA backed bill to reach the floor for a vote. The bill would have allowed citizens to have gun in a locked car in their employer's parking lot.
A few members may have quit, but there has been no mass exodus from the NRA in TN.
By targeting and defeating Maggat the NRA has demonstrated that crossing the NRA can be hazardous to one's political career. Other politicians in TN will now pay more attention to the NRA.
Aren't there some posters who claim that the NRA is a toothless dog?

(14,918 posts)Maggart was an unlikely target, given that she was a co-sponsor of a previous bill allowing guns in bars. She is an ALEC tool, and was a co-sponsor of Tennessee's voter ID law. I'm not sorry to see her kicked out by her constituents, especially since she had.been gaining steam at the state level. Laughably, Rogers' campaign literature was critical of the influence of "outside groups" on local affairs.

(12,072 posts)In another thread that you started, and abandoned, you say that it is time to elect politicians who don't fear the NRA. http://www.democraticunderground.com/117258789
In many states and districts being targeted for defeat by the NRA means that it is time to find a different career. In many placesTHE PEOPLE (You know, VOTERS) want their politicians to be pro-gun and won't elect one who isn't.

Inquiring minds want to know.

I know the NRA gets a lot of flack for not getting involved enough in state politics. There are a lot of people in TN that are NRA members, and wanted to see this bill passed. A few might resign, but they might get a few new members to join. An organization with over 4 million members will never make every member happy all the time.
I have to wonder, if she didn't like the bill, did she offer amendments, or did she really want to defeat a bill she disagreed with.
