A good program and again the NSSF comes through by increasing participation in shooting sports. There is a list at the link of the schools recieving aid from NSSF.

Wouldn't it just be easier to say "Its mission is to sell guns"?
Hmm.

Dunno what "Freedom Group" is, but I suspect it isn't a firearms manufacturer ... no, I'm wrong! It is indeed a firearms manufacturer. I should have known from its name, of course.
Don't get me wrong; I have nothing at all against the shooting sports (hunting aside, which calls for a more nuanced response).
But a corporate donor is a corporate donor, and a bunch of corporate donors with a fancy name are still promoting their own interests.
Now, if the NSSF were to start funding, oh, well, I was going to say organizations that combat violence against women, but I think they'd be hard pressed to find any that wanted their money.

I got the trivia answer right!
Oh, well, look here.

"NSSF Files Suit to Stop Multiple Sales Reporting of Rifles"
Etc.
burf
(1,164 posts)So? Where do they get their money? You say "corporate donor". Where do those corporations get their money? From people who buy their products. If you don't like their policies,? Don't buy their products or join their organization. If enough people subscribe to your side of the argument, the NSSF and the related groups and industries will be gone, out of business. But recent figures on gun sales seem to show the public is more in favor of gun ownership and the shooting sports. BTW, individual memberships are available.
As far as opposing the multiple sales reporting, you mean the ATF program as outlined by "Demand Letter 3" in which the ATF required gun shops in four southwestern states to report multiple sales? A requirement, not based in law, but in a kneejerk reaction to them (ATF) being caught running guns that were used in the death of Bryan Terry?
I also urge you to spend a little more time looking into the NSSF and their website. They do a lot to promote gun safety and training. Heck, maybe I'll even see you at the SHOT show!

(38,549 posts)(But how about darts? Doesn't take the strength that archery, for instance, calls for.)
Canada's two claims to fame in that regard are Linda what'sername, our gold medalist ... and unfortunately, a raving right-winger and gun militant ... and the Canadian Forces guy who held that long-range sniper record for a while.

I enjoy watching the winter Olympics one where they ski and shoot. It's just so ... Nordic. And hectically slow.
But formal shooting competitions aren't actually mixed-sex, are they? Maybe at local levels?
I'm quite serious when I think this is a perfectly nice activity that I quite understand people enjoying, and I think it's a sport (although I might really say hobby) I'm sure I'd enjoy -- just a matter of personal proclivity. I liked archery in school, and the primitive video game I was a fanatic about (and damned good at) at the arcade years ago was Star Castle, where aiming and shooting were the only tasks -- and real sports shooting would come without the anxiety about getting blown up, to boot. It's just that to take it up, here, I'd have to be travelling to the other end of town by bus and back, on top of getting the permit to start with (the firearms would be supplied by the club -- and fortunately I have access to a club that I know would not be frequented by militants), and I'm just too lazy and disorganized. And I probably should have done it before all the eye surgery ... but glasses correct astigmatism, and a little loss of peripheral vision in one eye wouldn't be the handicap it might be for, say, soccer.

Yes they are. Not only at the local level but at the national and international levels as well.

(1,164 posts)involved in shooting sports with the reports of more women purchasing guns. Once the ladies learn the basics and start getting comfortable with the noise, recoil and the sound of the clang when the bullet hits steel, they find out that shooting is fun.
The firearms and accessory makers are really starting to market to women. Not only the pink guns but clothing and accessories that are made to fit women. I saw a video a while back where Smith and Wesson was doing marketing research on women and guns. They must of had over 100 women, some who had never fired a weapon and were teaching them marksman(women)ship. S&W was getting feedback from the participants. S&W really had their act together on it, all participants, instructors and such were women making the ladies much more comfortable in the program.
iverglas
(38,549 posts)... why women would be more in need of getting comfortable with noise and all the rest than men who have never used/been around firearms?
Pretty patronizing, I fear. Kind of like the moronic pink gun thing you mention.
burf
(1,164 posts)One of the primary reasons people don't take up shooting is the noise. This hopefully result in the repeal of 1934 Firearms Act prohibition of silencers, also know as surpressors.
As far as the pink gun stuff. It must be selling, there's more of the stuff being introduced all the time. If there wasn't a market for the stuff why would they keep making it?

The $300k doesn't seem so far out of line compared to revenues when compared to companies like Nike..
The US gun and ammunition manufacturing industry includes about 300 companies with combined annual revenue of about $6 billion.
http://www.firstresearch.com/Industry-Research/Gun-and-Ammunition-Manufacturing.html
compared to:
Fiscal year 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011
Sales/Revenue $16.33B $18.63B $19.08B $19.01B $20.89B
http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/nke/financials
As has been stated before, the combined total of all US firearms manufacturers would not make the Fortune 500 list.
I just thought that anybody who didn't already know might like to know that the National Shooting Sports Federation is a total and obviously intentionally misleading misnomer, and it's really the National Firearms Manufacturers Association.
Why would a shooting sports federation be lobbying against the US federal government's proposed multiple long gun sales reporting measure?
We have a similarly named outfit here, although I am unable to find a list of its directors and officers or such:
http://www.cdnshootingsports.org/
Funny how its entire home page has nothing to do with shooting sports, and everything to do with right-wing politics. And how it so obviously takes its cues from south of the border: "Canadians treated like felons ..." There's no such thing as a "felon" in Canada. Hell, they're even promoting old John Lott.

(1,164 posts)Click on the Promote,Protect, Preserve at the bottom of their homepage and there is the info. Why don't you mention the three other quadrants of the opening page. Oh, they are actively involved in safety, hunting and shooting. Well imagine that, a trade organization that promotes activities using their products. What will they think of next? Does your dislike of a trade organization relating firearms also extend other trade organizations ? If you look around, there seems to be a trade organization for just about anything. Again, if you don't like their products, don't buy 'em. If enough people agree with you and do the same, they won't be in business long.
Or are you just more upset at the fact the methods used by the NSSF are actually working?
Regards the long guns and Demand Letter 3, my reply is up post.
Why are you ascribing emotions to me? What suggested to you that I am "upset"? Please answer that, quoting something I said, or describing the process by which you inferred that from something I said.
I was pretty clear. I said I just thought that anyone who might be misled by the name the organization had given itself might want to know what it really is, so I posted that information. Big whup.
If anybody sounds upset here, it ain't me.

(38,549 posts)describing the pink gunners as "moronic".
I described the pink GUNS as moronic. In a separate post in reply to yourself, that you read and replied to. Why would you claim I said something completely different?
Good god, man. If I say that North American football is a moronic game, are you going to claim that I am upset by football?
I had no idea I was regarded as such a delicate flower hereabouts.
Actually, I know I'm not. And you know that I'm not upset by a bunch of gun manufacturers funding a sporting activity. You do seem awfully upset by my pointing out that the group doing that is actually a bunch of gun manufacturers, though!

(1,164 posts)but lately its alot safer at shooting ranges than at other sporting activites. Look at what happened to the Orange Bowl mascot in last nights game. Or, how about the two NY Rangers fans that got beat up by the Flyers fans? True, they didn't get shot, but I have yet to see such activity at any shooting event.
