By Allan Brettman, The Oregonian
David West behaved as a cattle buyer might when a prized bull entered the auction ring.
"One-hundred fifty for the revolver sir!" West shouted. "It's not too late!"
Alas, it was too late because the man with the pearl-handled revolver proceeded to turn over the firearm Saturday afternoon in exchange for a $75 Fred Meyer gift card. He chose that route rather than sell the gun for more money to West or any of a half-dozen men standing on a sidewalk between North Broadway Street and aparking lot north of Memorial Coliseum.
They were among a group of gun buyers who'd staked out periphery positions as a firearms "turn-in" took place inside the parking lot. The Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation conducted the turn-in for four hours. Gun owners could turn in a weapon to foundation volunteers, who were assisted by Portland police with handling the weapons for eventual destruction. In return for each operable gun, owners received the gift card.

So the Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation wants to make people buy new guns from the evil, NRA-tied gun manufactures?

(3 posts)Sounds good to me!
The gun nutz are spending money on guns that already exist rather than spending it on new guns. These gun buy-back protests only hurt the manufacturers producing new guns.
Hopefully, none of these buyers are criminals or unusually mentally defective.

(55 posts)I'll be purchasing a brand new AR15 in September. I already have 3 (well, four if you include the AR10T) but I want a tack driver, something that can empty a beta C mag into a dime at 100 meters. I have an Uzi too btw. oh yes, and two smith and wesson .500 magnums (my vest busters ), as well as numerous other semi automatic pistols with very large magazine capacities and revolvers. And while we're on the subject of high capacity magazines, I have so many of them that if they're ever banned again, I will make a small fortune selling them at exorbitant prices. Of course I have a concealed carry permit and I typically walk around in public with a loaded firearm hidden from view too. Does this make up for the previous poster's slur?

(12,072 posts)I spent the entire day at a gun buy-back. Almost all the guns were junk.

(26,602 posts)"They have a right to buy guns," Sessions said. "That's in the Constitution. So that doesn't bother me a bit."
Sessions dismissed the possibility that the sidewalk buyers would then sell to "undesirables. That's not the case. These people know what they're doing, They know the laws. They know they'd lose that right if they did sell to the undesirables."
Equally unlikely, said Sessions, who assisted the foundation with its guns buyback for nine years, is the notion that gang members would be among those turning in guns.
If these events provide an impetus for people to remove an unwanted and perhaps poorly-stored firearm from the home, that's a good thing. But it's a stretch to think they have any major effect on public safety in general, and it's unfortunate to see people disposing of property at a loss (especially if the food gift card was an important draw for them). Not to mention the possibility of a truly interesting firearm getting melted down...

(5,417 posts)The person selling the gun gets a bit more money for it.
Somebody gets a new (to them gun),it sounds like a win/win to me.
The only downside is by selling it to a private citizen you are not taking money away from an anti gun group.
I like this quote ""I believe the majority of people would not show up here today if they did not want their gun removed from circulation."
I doubt the majority of people care. Probably a lot of old ladies who's husbands have died, and they no longer want the gun. If they get some money for groceries that's good.
I always wonder how many people are trading in guns to these just because they are worth more for this trade in that the value of the gun.
I traded in a Broken H&R revolver that probably wasn't worth 50.00, and got 100.00 for it. I used the money towards a glock. The anti's can claim success, I get twice what a gun is worth. Thats a win/win in my book.
