Longer deployments and distrust of senior leaders are among likely reasons sailors leave the military, according to an independent survey organized by an officer concerned about the Navy's future.
The survey followed a paper written by F/A-18 pilot Cmdr. Guy Snodgrass, who warned that the Navy is on the cusp of a manpower crisis. Talented, highly qualified officers are choosing to leave the service, Snodgrass wrote. The paper struck a chord, circulating quickly online this spring.
Snodgrass designed the 15-minute survey with a volunteer advisory board, with the aim of shedding light on why sailors stay in the Navy or leave. About 5,500 people completed it online in May.
Besides extended deployments and perceived leadership shortfalls, the recently released findings say that poor work-life balance and decreased job stability are among factors likely hurting retention.
