Trump budget could expand definition of 'sanctuary city'

Alan Gomez , USA TODAY 6:02 p.m. ET May 23, 2017

The budget released by the White House on Tuesday provided the first detailed explanation of how the Trump administration defines a "sanctuary city."

Buried in the 1,284-page appendix to the budget is a proposed change to federal law that would require local police to hold suspects for up to 48 hours solely to give Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents time to investigate their immigration status. Failure to do so would allow the federal government to declare those agencies as sanctuaries and withhold millions of dollars in grants.

The administration has urged local police to honor those requests, a controversial practice known as "detainers." The proposed change for the first time would make them requirements.

"This would be a radical re-definition of immigration law," said Philip Wolgin, managing director for immigration policy at the liberal Center for American Progress. "I am deeply, deeply troubled by this change. It makes me angry."

The change would have to be approved by Congress before it would take effect.

Another back door way to exert control when citizens unite to protest against a proposal/decision of current administration? Pretty obvious this is business as usual for candycorn crown and that he wants to be the big cheez (the only bigly cheez and nothing but the bigly cheez) therefore making illegal anything that stands against his way seems to be his modis operandi.

yet another in fact does. Between gerrymandering and Russian interference as well as anger, racism and fake news propaganda by corporations and religious bent entities we have a man-child who lies, cheats, steals, creates chaos within the country he professes to love. God help us while the man-child shows his love.

Voters will assert themselves at the voting box, some times more voters than other times. Yet this administration has demonstrated they will do what they damn well decide is in their best interests....and the voters be dammed.

Candycorn crown has shown he will use whatever authority he 'assumes' to exact revenge on those he feels goes against him. Therefore, renaming/redefining or making vague enough definitions that he can interpret to exact such revenge is of concern. He's clearly shown it's is in his character to do such. Citizens need be prepared to accept his history and understand he will do the same as time goes on. Citizens expecting him to do differently will simply give him room to pressure the country into darker and deeper hole to dig out of. He won't be in office forever, even if only 4 years. We, voters, will still remain and have to navigate whatever he and the KGOP dictate.

Meantime, citizens need accept what he shows us he is.... lying, cheating, selfish, self absorbed, greedy and vengeful when he feels crossed. Allowing him to create rules he can use to exact revenge needs be fought hard by the citizens in united fashion.

Hope I clarified.
