FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.

The Womack Army Medical Center in Fayetteville will have to trim more than 500 civilian jobs next fiscal year.

The Fayetteville Observer reports that the medical center's chief of staff, Lt. Col. Charles Unruh, says the center has been ordered by the Army to reduce its nearly 2,900 civilian employees to 2,340.

The cuts are to take effect in fiscal 2015, which begins in October of next year.

Unruh said the center's goal is to avoid layoffs.
