'In online video, minorities find an audience'

'In online video, minorities find an audience'
http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/in-online-video-minorities-find-an-audience/2012/04/20/gIQAdhliWT_story.html

A disproportionate share of YouTube’s top personalities are minorities, a striking contrast to the most popular shows on mainstream television, where the stars are largely white. These minority-produced, home-grown shows are drawing massive audiences — the top one has 5.2 million subscribers — enough to attract the attention of major advertisers.

...Among the 20 most-subscribed-to channels on YouTube, eight feature minorities. Most are Asian American. Many more black and Latino shows populate the top 50. These producers are also finding an audience that has been largely neglected by Hollywood. Nearly 80 percent of minorities regularly watch online videos, compared with less than 70 percent of whites, the Pew Internet & American Life Project says.

Here's what gets me.

This entire piece is a rehash of another piece The Washington Post did about this -- damn near ONE YEAR AGO.

'YouTube use explodes, and minorities lead the way'
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-tech/post/youtube-use-explodes-and-minorities-lead-the-way/2011/07/26/gIQAduhnaI_blog.html

And yet, the shows that are getting made and/or that get all of the acclaim seem to be getting whiter and whiter and whiter.

Online television/videos has a long way to go, but it appears that in at least one area that matters, they are light years ahead of "established" media. The film and television industry will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century or they'll get left behind. Wouldn't bother me a bit if that's exactly what happened.

Are you concerned that people might just think "Girls" is another example of white people problems?

Definitely. We really tried to be aware and bring in characters whose job it was to go "Hashtag white people problems, guys." I think that's really important to be aware of. Because it can seem really rarified. When I get a tweet from a girl who's like, "I'd love to watch the show, but I wish there were more women of color." You know what? I do, too, and if we have the opportunity to do a second season, I'll address that.

It just blows my mind that the creator of this show actually appears to be AGITATED that people expect her to have people with melanin in her show. As if she is just so damn inconvenienced by the whole thing.

Don't know if that show will ever make it Down Under but I don't think I'll bother "inconveniencing" myself by watching it.

how boring they are!!

i am thinking that, generally speaking, it takes melanin to recoginize the vitality of melanin!

"I don't think I'll bother 'inconveniencing' myself by watching it," either, dear Number23!!
