I say on what is supposed to be a LIBERAL BOARD.
That I have to be careful not to indict white people as a collective whole for what they are CLEARLY responsible for doing and guilty of, MYSELF INCLUDED.

Makes us all guilty, even the ones who try hard to change things, as many here probably do.
We are still guilty to some degree
This isnt my opinion...this is basic stuff, very basic

(68,644 posts)And I think it's somewhat a reflection of the real world, this "liberal board".
Juries, anonymous jurors, running the place-- that leads to all kinds of grief that isn't at all liberal, not in the way you and I use the term.

(4,713 posts)I'm done biting my tongue, this place has gone to shit & as a minority I'll be damned if I'm going to just sit back & watch people who claim to be liberals act like complete racists & not get called on it.
randys1
(16,286 posts)gone.
And you know I dont blame the obvious rightwingers who are here to sabotage, I blame that group of libertarians who think economic issues are all that matters and who dont understand or for that matter give a shit about minorities or Women, etc.
We have lots like that here.
I am as milk toast white as you can get, with my looks anyway.
But I also know what I am told by my brothers and sisters in the African American community and I know they are the experts, not me
giftedgirl77
(4,713 posts)getting to the point where coming here isn't even worth the trouble. When I first joined I was really excited to find a place that was sort of a safe haven for Dems, now it's just turned into such a hateful nasty place most the time it's hard to believe it's called Democratic Underground. Especially for minorities.
and + your response to giftedgirl 77....

(24,544 posts)We do have some remarkable friends here. But they seem few and far between. Most here are so busy trying to TELL us what is and is not racism/bigotry/oppression, trying to TELL us that as "liberals" they've always been "on our side" even when they're busy cosying up to the folks who shit all over us at every given opportunity and other assorted stupidity it's too much to take.
Between the Trojan horse president, the "lemme tell you people who/what MLK was" from folks who don't even know who the fuck THEY are let alone who MLK was, and other assorted numbskulls you are so right. This place has totally gone to shit.
For the most part, I have stopped engaging. But if you still have the energy to go for it, then I'll definitely have your back as much as I'm able.
JustAnotherGen
(31,823 posts)Like I did! We were goofing around one night laughing at people quoting MLK so I just went with it.
Example - in the words of MLK - I like the Tin Man.

(11,833 posts)MLK means a lot to me. I was frustrated seeing him 'quoted' by people who don't listen well to people of color. I get pretty down sometimes. Sad and fed up with lack of respect toward those who know things from their own experience. I'm glad you and jag and others here can share some laughs, along with our joys & sorrows.

(4,713 posts)taking but most the time by the time I've gotten to that point I'm so furious I just have to walk away. The Native American thread today has a real beauty in it, he wants to know why he can't be called a Native American if he's lived in LA his whole life & people entertained that shit. I told him to audit a 2d grade class at his local elementary school & stop trolling. Then I got called a troll by some new poster. I don't go a week without getting asked 1) how I got my citizenship or 2) if I'm here legally.
I'm freakin Puerto Rican but brown skin & a Spanish accent doesn't stop the assumptions. The one's screaming economic justice have not a clue about social justice, they only throw out MLK & Malcolm X because they think it lends credit to their argument but as soon as you start to debate them you see that they truly don't have a real understanding of what they were fighting for.
You know I've always got your back as well.
Number23
(24,544 posts)And not only have not the first fucking clue what they're talking about, sit around high fiving and giggling with the biggest race baiting, entitled, privileged assholes here and then want to chase after your ass when you talk about the PERSONAL racism you've felt as a member of a minority group in Western civilization. It is unreal.
Girl, as for my "beatings" here I just look at who the folks are trying to do the "beatings" and that tells me all I need to know. I have never seen more clueless, ignorant people than most of the darlings in GD and their fans. And the fact that I really don't even engage for the most part anymore but all I have to do is type something to someone else and one of the chihuahuas comes racing out of the shadows to nip at my heels is equally illuminating. It's like their "MUST...."CORRECT".... THE...NEGRO!!!1" switch never gets turned off. Hell that shit seems to goes into overdrive the LESS they know about something.
I missed the Native American idiocy and I consider that a good thing. I spend so much less time here and it is better for me in every single way.

I have your back, all of you. I do it the best way I can, Number23. Fact is you all have helped me out many times when I was being....hmmmm, schooled for posting about White America. You had the facts and the Ammo that I do not have being white. Some of those threads were beauty to behold and an education for many whether they came away with an awareness or not.
Number23
(24,544 posts)Although it also apparent that there are some here that absolutely cannot ABIDE me having an opinion that differs from theirs. It's like "who the hell do you think you are, trying to think for yourself and shit?!?!"
It's one thing to be having a conversation with someone and things get heated. What I find happens to me 99% of the time is that I will post something to someone and then someone ELSE will come flying into the conversation for the sole purpose of insulting me or accusing me of calling everyone racists. And it is always, always, ALWAYS the same crowd that despises this president, Democrats, the world, and life itself. I have no doubt they act this way because along with being miserable as fuck, this is probably the only way they can get anyone to talk to them. Even feeling sorry for them doesn't change the fact that I really, really wish they'd leave me the hell alone.
And thanks for having my back! That means alot

(24,544 posts)your ass. And you get the race baiter shit way more than I do, by merely having the audacity to even TALK about race to these damn people who have spent alot of time and energy building that bubble that says "I am a "liberal". I can't possibly be racist or have racial insensitivities."
I was mentioning in another thread that I fussed at you once for going after our Favorite Fellow for like the five thousandth time because it wasn't going to make any difference and his clueless, hateful fans wouldn't care anyway. Well, true his fans didn't care but I think your efforts have gotten alot of people to see him for what he is. So serious props to you for not listening to me.
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)that most "debates" are not for the benefit of those involved in the debate; but rather, those listening to the "debate".
To quote (paraphrase) Malcolm X ... quoting the Honorable ... "When you offer a man a choice between two glasses of water ... one clear and crystal clean and the other brackish and muddy ... you simply let them choose."
I simply allow folks to choose.

Behind the Aegis
(53,956 posts)Ok, now that is out of the way...what I see are people talking out of their asses. Their knowledge of black heroes is limited to what they learned during "Black History Month", likely in a school where the bulletin boards were plastered with a few quotes, and voilà, they are now experts of African-American history! It is typical to see just a select handful of black persons even mentioned, because they are the staple of predominately white schools' "Black History Month" presentations. So, once again, it comes to defining a movement using the lens of majority privilege/understanding. There was one post in particular that really bothered me and a few others because it was an attempt to re-white...er, re-write, the histories of several minorities.
I have seen many examples of "MUST...."CORRECT".... THE...NEGRO!!!1" here and other places. Usually called "whiteplanin'", it really has found a home on the left. It is one thing to disagree with a POC, as they don't haven't cornered the market on knowledge or always have sound opinions, but that is vastly different than telling a POC his/her opinion is wrong because they don't understand racism, or how their (the majority/white) opinion/narrative is the correct one. I have seen more people telling POC (and other minorities) the minority posters' understanding of the issues is WRONG and they (white/male/straight/Christian) will explain it to them. Sure, there are few of us minorities, who time to time, get agitated and wrongly accuse someone of 'splain' when, in fact, they are simply disagreeing with us. However, the majority of the time, it really is the majority posters "correcting" the views/narrative of the minority poster. It is offensive and it is bigoted! I have been on the receiving end of it often. A few times it was in relation to GLBT issues, even had "heterophobia" slung at me (think "reverse racism" for sexual orientation), but as a Jewish poster, there are scads of posters here who "know better" than the Jews. From attempting to redefine "anti-Semitism" to actually telling Jewish posters they don't really understand it or overuse it (even had someone accuse a Jewish poster of playing the "anti-Semite card!" , it comes down to the majority trying to FORCE their reality onto a minority in attempts to negate our reality. There are scads of examples of non-Jewish people telling "us dumb Jews" what anti-Semitism really is and how we are "doing it wrong" when it comes to exposing or confronting anti-Semitism. Of course, they can always find a Jew who supports their position so that makes it a-OK....sound familiar (Cornel West)?
The other thing in play is the fear of being criticized. There is a thread about "passive bias" in GD (what's on your bookshelves), and many of the responses are nothing but lashing out or missing the point all together. They see any thing which conflicts with their world view as being bad, incorrect, or misinformed. They misunderstand (in some cases, I believe it is purposely) the idea of expanding one's horizon isn't a call to destroy the horizons of others! Along the same vein of fear, is shame. I have seen people "shaming" others (gays seem to be the target right now) and how if you are gay, how can you not see this reality is the TRUTH, and yours...well, it's just wrong!
We all view our world through our own respective lenses, but minorities, usually, not always, are often quite capable and easily see the perspective of others, especially the majority. For the most part, we were raised in the same racist, sexist, homophobic, anti-Semitic, (add other -isms) as everyone else. We have been victimized by these systems. WE don't need to be "corrected", the systems do!
Number23
(24,544 posts)Oh, what a little darling!!! If I pay for postage, will you ship him out to me??
You have got a fine collection of gorgeous animals there. What beauties! And I agree with everything you've posted, especially about the really shallow knowledge that people have about minorities. And what's worse is that many of these same folks scream like hell about the ONE month in February for Black History Month when they need to be learning about this stuff 24/7/365. When I first started learning the little I know about Asian and Middle Eastern history, I could not understand why EVERYONE wasn't learning these things.
We have been victimized by these systems. WE don't need to be "corrected", the systems do!
Tell it, brother!!

(53,956 posts)He's our sweet little man, who gave me fits today because he was limping. Turns out he is starting to get arthritis in his back knees. (He is 9.5yo, so it isn't too unexpected.) We have had him since he was 2 months old.
I see "you people" are being told, once again, why your supportive of Clinton. Name recognition. Quite frankly, it is getting way too repetitive and reflects a very nasty side of the left. I have run across a few more situations today of white men telling black people how wrong their opinions are or what their real motivations are, and of course, many white people are finding that it could not possibly be biased based. As I said before, it is one thing to disagree with someone, quite another to tell them what they think or feel.
Many cultures are underrepresented in our education system, but too many people think themselves experts because they can read a few articles on the internet. Of course, then there are those who have "friends" who are the minority in question, and even a few who have a distant family member who is "one of those people."
The upside to some of these threads? It really let's you know who is friend, foe, or duplicitous.

He might as well have been a poster here, educating us about how great Ronald Reagan was.
Funny, I dont recall the only credible Reagan, Ron Jr. saying this.
Only the shithead Reagan.
But this shitheads reaction to this movie is what is played out here everyday whether it is about Black people or Gay people, Native Americans, etc.

If you state that people don't like to be stereotyped - it indicates to me that you ARE familiar with the post, felt stereotyped - and perhaps alerted on it? If you wish to debate his post - please go to that thread in GD and have the battle there.
This thread is not the place for that discussion.
He was very smart to NOT put it in his OP.

MrScorpio
(73,631 posts)Only because I've figured out that the best way to talk about this issue is in general terms about how white supremacy affects everyone, regardless of any white individual's support for it, and group dynamics vs any individual's responsibility about the subject.
No individual, even any white person, has any control over systemic and cultural white supremacy. But if they truly want to be allies, they have to lose the feelings of guilt and feelings of being attacked when they're not. Our white allies all have a responsility to gain self-awareness, understand that their own experiences are not universally applied across color lines and that the voices of people of color are equal to their own.
Whitesplaining is a problem, as it denotes either a conscious or subconscious dependence on their own privilege, where their own whiteness is supposed to be a standard which is automatically applied to all.
Racism only works as a process of white supremacy in this country. Once more and more whites start to understand how patriarchal white supremacy destroys our entire culture from within, then perhaps we can all go about abolishing it before it destroys us.
Hopefully it's not too late.
