People Think 'The Wiz Live!' is Racist. Twitter Says, 'Huh?'
https://www.colorlines.com/articles/people-think-wiz-live-racist-twitter-says-huh
Actual tweet: "I just learned there is a Black version of 'The Wizard of Oz' called 'The Wiz.' How is this not racist?"
Evan (@MJTM) November 23, 2015
Can you imagine the outrage if a show advertised an "All White Cast"?! But #TheWizLive is getting praised for having an "All Black Cast"... Melly (@4princessmel) November 27, 2015
You can go to the article for the screen shots of the tweets without having to go to the twitter but suffice to say - the (dare I post it) white privilege oozing out of the pores of some of these total tool dipshits tweeting this nonsense is astounding.
Especially the 'tit for tat' ones who are so ignorant to the entire dominant culture that they have never even heard of the Wizard of Oz.
In the meantime . . . it was a hit! I'm glad to have been able to contribute to the viewer numbers.

(23,340 posts)Great singing, great dancing.
I was googling all the players while watching. David Alan Grier is now 60! and he was very strong in voice and performance. The younger ones were all great, like Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow, Shanice Williams as Dorothy.
Costumes and dance routines were phenomenal.

(13,616 posts)can you put together a musical featuring people who have all gone Platinum and people use race to somehow make it less legitimate. As a said in an earlier rant, people had NO problem with Carrie "American Idol winner" Underwood being given the role Julie Andrews made famous in the Sound of Music. That would have deserved thrown vegetables because you had a country music newcomer being given one of the great musical roles ever, but that musical purely had a white cast, so those who want to determine what whiteness is picked a country singer that used TV to leapfrog to stardom over those who spent years playing on circuits. So of course, when the Wiz comes along, loaded with artists that have sold literal boatloads of records, have selves full of grammys, sold millions of concert tickets over the past decade, it is deemed inferior to the one where they tried to make an American Idol the replacement for Julie Andrews, Bloody Julie Andrews!

(135,425 posts)They knew pretty much immediately that she was The One.
This was her first Big Break--like I said downthread, a Star is Born! We'll be seeing more of her--she was grace under pressure, courage under fire, and absolutely SUPERB in the role. She nailed it!

(24,544 posts)she could very clearly SANG too. I wished she'd had more songs.
I don't know why but I am tickled pink that she's back in the public eye and to rave reviews too (reading your comments). This whole thread has made my day. I don't know how I'm going to watch this show but I will have to find a way.

Sweet Lord in Heaven... I'm sure that "Jeff" will make good and damn sure that white outrage will be forthcoming any second now.
Glad to hear the show is a hit! There seem to be alot of really interesting things being done on Broadway.

(11,833 posts)by asking someone nearby you how to obtain it through a file sharing site. They are often called 'peer to peer' sites. It's best to have an individual in person show you which site might work best for you, and how to view it on whatever device you're using. Good luck!

It might take a while for the stream to load. Or it may require DirectTV. Not sure.
Or try an NBC app on your streaming device. I'd bet NBC is showing on different cable channels too. Try exploring the NBC web site for ways to watch it.
Hope something works for you!

I watched a good chunk of it but I had a long day and dozed. I will say that the could have sub-titled it "A Star is Born" because Shanice Williams BROUGHT it. She was just amazing.

I saw the Broadway stage play on a high school trip. It was awesome, seemingly thousands of terribly excited students all over the place. Our class had fantastic seats because our fine arts teacher was on it! I remember the awesome, awesome poster with the design/silhouette of a lady I'd never seen anything quite like before or since. I remember watching the commercials and counting the days. Caught a glimpse of Geofrey Holder backstage and we squealed! We thought it was Mr. Holder because we screamed at every person backstage we could see
And Stephanie Mills, honies! Stephanie Mills! Mabel King singing No Bad News. I've got the chills remembering that fine moment. Ease on Down the Road! Home!!! Believe!!! Gawd, Yes! Just about every song a hit on the radio.
Thanks, JAG, for posting! Thanks, y'all for all the information on how to watch! I feel a lovely weekend is here
On edit, it couldn't have been Ms. King as Evillene on Broadway because I remember What's Happening was still on TV that year.

(31,828 posts)My MIL tied her three older kids to her and headed down from The Bronx to take them to see it. When they lived in the US in the early 70's to early 80's they really wanted their kids to get the full American experience. My husband made her take him two more times he loved it so much.

(8,709 posts)The YouTuber posted the songwriter, Charlie Smalls. Over a year ago, my husband and I were talking about childhood Saturday morning shows, the Monkees in particular. I told him I saw a black guy named Charlie on The Monkees and he didn't believe me. Took a while but found it, of course! It was the last scene in the broadcast with Davy Jones, Some Like It Lukewarm. It was a lesson that I've never forgotten, besides seeing a brother on the show.
I was then shocked to learn that Mr. Smalls died back in '87. He done good and I thought he shouldn't be forgotten.
It starts about 20:42

(11,833 posts)Charlie Smalls. What a cool guy.
When they review rhythms it reminds me of evenings I spent at SOB's (Sounds of Brazil) club in NYC. Those shakers were at every table. Eventually everyone was shaking, forming lines, hugging each other & dancing. Good times!
