(253 posts)When they are casting white actors to play POC, Emma stone as a Hawaiian is the most outrageous, but there are so many more examples.

(16,286 posts)Concussion, but the same rule doesnt apply because of "The Theory of Everything" actor getting one and few saw that.
White people playing POC
STILL!
Reminds me of the guy who played an Indian in the robot movie, forget what it was called now

(24,470 posts)I'm here in Los Angeles where they are always released first and I don't think it's been out more than 2 weeks.
edit - OK it was released to 2800 theatres on Christmas Day. It's now in about 2000.
Theory of Everything was released in Nov. 2014.

(253 posts)That's a very dumb reason. Nobody saw birdmanor boyhood and they won a lot last year. For all the supposed activisim in Hollywood they sure haven't done much to promote strong minority character in movies or TV.

(24,544 posts)at every single level, from what I understand.
One of the few iconic (if stereotyped as hell) roles for a Native American woman and they cast a white woman to play her. I tried so hard to muster up the energy to see that movie last year but I just couldn't.

(31,823 posts)They are so-called liberals when it suits them - but maybe they aren't so liberal about race as they are other issues.
As well - it's still heavily weighted towards older white men.

(15,369 posts)didn't get a nomination because he is one of my favorite actors and I love just about anything he does. Period.

(20,606 posts)A tough movie to watch but he absolutely inhabits that role!
Ridiculous that he was not recognized for that fearless performance.

As for the Variety piece, holy shit:
In 1956, Variety ran a series of articles asking why there arent better roles for black actors. Three decades later, the situation hadnt improved. On Feb. 19, 1982, Variety carried the front-page banner NAACP faults film employment. At a press conference, the group released a white list, naming 43 films in which the organization says blacks have been excluded from significant roles in front of and behind the cameras. The story added that every major studio was represented on the list of movies.
Similarly, on Feb. 12, 1991, Variety ran a front-page story about the findings of the DGA Womens Steering Committee: Of 207 feature-film assignments, 11 went to women. Thats 5.3%. Nearly 25 years later, the number had barely moved: Women comprised 9% of directors on the top 250 domestic grossing films and 12% of directors on the top 500 domestic grossing films, according to a new report by the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.
So for FIFTY YEARS these guys have known there's a problem, and yet every effort to address has faded into nothing. That says it all. And any group that nominates '50 Shades of Gray' for anything other than trash pickup doesn't have a leg to stand on.
randys1
(16,286 posts)That the argument is Will isnt getting one for Concussion because nobody saw it, but nobody saw Theory of Everything and the white actor got it for that
I would have to watch it again to get more

I got a great deal on a lifetime subscription, and because of it, I can watch the UK version of BBC News in real time. Normally as a Yank, they block me out because of my IP address. With a VPN, you can pose as an American to watch American shows.
Just a thought. This is mine: https://www.purevpn.com/ Not saying it's the best, just one that gave me a great deal.

when Michael Jordan (the actor, not the hoopster) did so well he even got Sly stallone a Golden Globe,
this is outrage.
To hell with Hollywood, I hope China and Australia eat you.

(31,823 posts)Thats by screenwriters and producers need to continue to focus on characters that will appeal to Americans. Supposedly - Asia won't tolerate a non white lead. I think there is some truth to that. At what point do we say - this is America - shove off if you don't like it. Starts with me, the blacklist, readers, etc etc. Watch the indie focused women leadership and what screenplays are getting pushed through their labs. That's the key to the change.
Duvernay can't shoot what doesn't exist. If not me - then who?

(14,176 posts)for Creed, but giving a nomination--and I'm sure an Oscar--to Stallone, who couldn't even be bothered to mention his much better co-star when he won the Golden Globe. I don't think Jordan was nominated for Fruitvale Station, either, and he was absolutely incredible in it.
And don't get me started with Straight Outta Compton not getting more nominations. Sure, you can argue that it doesn't belong in the Best Picture category because there are a lot of very good films there this year, butit deserved much more than it got.
DonCoquixote
(13,616 posts)If he was good enough to make Rocky 7 (and let's be honest it is that) get good reviews..then he deserves it.

It was STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON that he pretended to give the music award to, which was NOT even nominated.

Chris Rock (@chrisrock) January 15, 2016
Just earlier this week the nominees of the Oscars, presented by The Academy Awards, were announced and Hollywood and average Janes and Joes alike have been talking.
I'm not here for Jada and Will - these are the same damn fools that don't experience any racism at all. She doesn't get it both ways just because her husband didn't get nominated.
But Chris?
I'll be damned if I'm not going to at least watch the opening. This is gonna be epic!
