Related: About this forumThankful for this little corner of DU.
Cause GD is really killing me, today.
All the denial, equivocation, and "Colorblind" MLK appropriation is just wearing on me.
I really wonder sometimes why we even bother.
*Just random thoughts about how depressing DU has been in the last day or 2.

(110,159 posts)i have been in my own battles all day long, with the issue i fight for. my little corner of du. well said. in my little corner i am hearing you all are having your struggles, too. i could not read the OP in GD. exhausted. but i hear ya. and totally support you. and am so tired. actually, i am. but, i was trying to say, i am so sorry, this is what it has become.
i was saying on one of our threads.
they expect civility. civility needs rules. civility does not happen with lawlessness.

(68,644 posts)I spend more time in the small spaces these days.
And this past week or so has been like an invasion of low post provocateurs.
I suppose this one will be hidden too.

(885 posts)I keep coming back because DU is actually a great aggregator of information. Past that... it's just getting to be more than I can stand. During that Zimmerman trial I almost set my password to a random set of characters, so I wouldn't return.
Civility indeed...

(110,159 posts)crap. i do not know why. i just think racism should be the one fuckin obvious. and i am wrong.

(24,544 posts)forum's most pronounced specialties, actually.
GD was where I learned that MLK was more concerned "with class than color," and where he was "more renowned for his anti Vietnam War stance" or his support for sanitation workers in TN (huge percentages of which were likely black but that's besides the fact, I guess) than "just," (yes, you read that right... "JUST" black civil rights."
If they gave an award for "Folks Most Likely to Quote MLK at the Drop of a Hat When it is Beyond Apparent that they Have NO FUCKING CLUE Who He Was and Have No Respect for What He was About" my vote goes to GD and the folks at Fox News. Such interesting bedfellows.

(885 posts)I think found myself overwhelmed with the sheer number of threads. All of them with their own special brand of "ugh".
Of course, it's always the usual suspects, plus a new one that wasn't on my radar previously. They wore me out today.
Number23
(24,544 posts)the "usual suspects," so "concerned" with black folks that they have posted maybe all of three times in this forum but plaster GD with thread after thread, post after post about how MLK would feel about this and that as if they have the first clue.
They wore me out today.
I hear you. They wear me out too. Which is why like you, I am really glad that this forum exists and I am really glad that you are posting in it, MOrpheus.
I just wish that so many other black/minority posters (Karenina, Brewman, NatBurner, Uzybone, AspenRose, SemiCharmed Quark, Firedupdem, FrenchieCat, Starbucks Anarchist etc. etc. etc) were here and posting too. But they got worn out too. And they left. And this place really is lessened for that happening.

(31,849 posts)But only as a break from President Obama hateration.
It's funny though ... Someone will make their "with class than color," and where he was "more renowned for his anti Vietnam War stance" ... We refute the claim with MLK's previous and subsequent writings (with links) ... They disappear for a day or two, only to return with the same claim!
It's that the conduct that we (and they) chide the low-information rightwing for engaging in?

(24,544 posts)Deep down, deeeeeeeeeeeep down, they know they are sipping from the same cup as the Tea Partiers. Which is why every time anyone makes the very obvious comparison, they lose it.

(31,849 posts)and I repeat, MAY be different, their tactics are the same ... same leaps to the illogic, same reliance on false "facts", same out of hand rejection of any idea that does not agree with their opinion ... and, daresay I, same disrespect for "minorities."
sighhhhhh ...

(38,958 posts)the blocking GD from my latest page does wonders for my blood pressure. It also shortens the list considerably to things which I find more of interest as opposed to repetitive threads discussing the same thing ad infinitum.
That said I visit DU less, post very, very infrequently, staying in the smaller groups when I do any more and use FB as a news feed, by liking various pages such as Mother Jones, Alternet, AFL-CIO and alike.
M0rpheus
(885 posts)Facebook is the devil, but maybe I can find some middle ground to stand on.

(38,958 posts)Depending upon how you use it. I use it mostly as a newsfeed. Post there very infrequently. It is a great way to keep in touch with family and friends that would have otherwise fallen by the wayside. I won't argue politics there but irately do so.

(31,823 posts)Seriously - I couldn't resist throwing a few jabs yesterday.

(885 posts)With your sweet as pie, pals smilies that's you've co-opted to throw shade like little yellow ninjas!
I meant to ask you about your "History " with a certain poster in your other thread. Sounds interesting.

(31,823 posts)He's just very angry and has showed that before. . Directly to me. Called him out on it and he crawled away the last time.
Ahhhh - someone got my "theret there your safe and sound back in 1955" approach to the stupidity! Busteeeeeeed!
But having read that - my recent thread back here should make sense now. I pm's 1strg about it. That's not an innocent thread.
M0rpheus
(885 posts)I was watching it live!
I think I had just finished a post in that thread and went back to read that whole mess. That one has more than a few issues.
You're a better one than me, cause I would have had to call that one out by name, if I took the time to start an OP about it.
JustAnotherGen
(31,823 posts)If I had done that - it would have been alerted on.

(22,336 posts)I saw the thread about someone who didn't know what box to check or something and the responses were all about how color blind people were, and I didn't want to call anyone out but still thought it warranted mentioning.
But I didn't intend to create an even bigger problem.
M0rpheus
(885 posts)Generally, the OP's I see are good, honest attempts to discuss the issues. It's down in the comments that things get... messy. I know what I'm getting into when I click the link.
Yesterday though, made me feel all stabby.

(10,893 posts)I'm starting to understand why my big sister doesn't care for this site too much. It isn't the activity on the race threads that annoys me. What rubs me the wrong way is somewhat unrelated to race, regarding how a number of posters seem to behave the same way that they ridicule right-wingnuts of acting. Like the far-right, they are quick to snatch defeat from any compromise or middle-ground. There is no room for grey. Obama=Bush because of a few policies they may share disagreements on. Obama is to the Right of Reagan (forget everything he has accomplished and fought for so far versus how Reagan did shady stuff like crack down on the Black Panther Party and popularized the greatest scam in American history known as trickle-down economics). All 1%ers are evil. Et cetera. And just like the Right, when it comes to religion, some of them don't respect what other people believe. I can't tell you how many times I hear people here accuse Christians of believing in a "sky fairy" or declaring that Jesus and God don't exist, even though that can't be proven. What really drives me crazy is how they seem to single out Christianity and never really go after other religions. I'm OK with a person being an atheist, but it's another thing for people to be arrogant about it.

(1,989 posts)I totally understand. I missed this latest dust up. So, thankfully, I don't know what I missed. But, all of your postings sum it up for me pretty well.
My favorite comment OF ALL TIME...
"Frederick Douglass would have been proud of the person that HECKLED Michelle Obama".
I mean close your eyes and picture that one. Frederick Douglass steps into our time and space, opens his eyes and sees that a black man is President. I can't imagine a moment like that. He turns and sees the first lady being heckled by a white woman. And (apparently), he would be proud of ... the heckler.
In what reality are people really that clueless. (I'm trying to be polite.) DU...and they are proud of it.
And...as for bigotry and intolerance...some of these folk could give the tea party a run for their money.
At least the damn (sorry, I tried) tea party people hate you, create bad policies, and leave you alone.
Some in this bunch would smile at you, INSIST they have your back, while stabbing you in it. You can be friends as long as you remember that your own cause holds NO IMPORTANCE WHATSOEVER. Your purpose in life is to supply votes so that their lives can become easier. Hmm...that sounds like another era in our past, I'd rather not repeat. Where we toil, but keep our mouths shut...because God forbid, we should speak up about things that matter in our communities. Those things can wait.
Equality gap...spare me...

Most days...I ignore DU. Then, I'll pop in and a few posts will grab my attention. But, it doesn't take long for me to go...WTH???
