African American
Related: About this forumI have truly arrived. How, you ask?
I have my very own cadre of actual, living breathing BIRTHERS here. Yes, BIRTHERS.
Just as a certain crew is convinced that President Obama is not a citizen because he was born in the mythical, magical state of Hawaii, apparently Southwest Atlanta, Georgia is another place too exotic for certain individuals to understand that even though it's in the Southern part of the United States, it is is still AMERICA and that the people that are born there are in fact, wait for it...... AMERICANS!!!
But according to the Number23 Band of Birthers, I am not a United States citizen. This will come as an IMMENSE surprise to my employers! I mean, that will be HUGE. And why have these people decided I'm not a citizen? Because I am currently in Australia, something I have never made a secret of just as I never made a secret when I was in South America or the Middle East either.
Me being born in America doesn't matter. Me paying US taxes every year doesn't matter. The fact that the United States is the only country where I possess citizenship, including the only country IN THE WORLD whose elections I can vote in doesn't matter. The fact that my entire family is in America doesn't matter. According to this crew, because I am sitting in another country other than the USA that means that I am not a US citizen and that I don't have the right to talk about Obama, the United States, ACA or any damn thing else despite the fact that the US gets my money and my votes just like it gets theirs.
And these same folks howl and bray every single time they get compared to the Tea Party. Well, we can put that analogy aside! They have sunk to full fledged BIRTHER mode now. Huzzah!

(24,544 posts)this president and you'll get the same treatment.
Soon it will be, DU Birther: "hey 1SBM what state do you live in??" 1SBM responds: "I live in Texas/Washington D.C./wherever"
Birther: "You know, I have a real problem with people in Texas/DC/wherever talking about the affairs of OUR government. Because your state is corrupt/I've never been there/I'm just pulling stuff out of my ass as I type I think you need to just stay out of this."
We have all seen the similarities between this crew and the Tea Party but I never, ever, EVER thought I'd see the day when the non-stop concoction of ignorance and xenophobia they stew themselves in leads them to become straight up Birthers.

Oh, and the black on black crime stats minus the white on white crime stats. I gotta admit, i am mildly shocked by the way they act up around here. I was fooled into thinking democrats were better than republicans, they just do it different. Republicans get some black people around the want to put them front and center, proud as hell that they got a black person to kick it with them. Democrats, not so much. They just want us to shhhhh. Let them talk first and if theres any time left then, okay as long as we don't say anything that makes them uncomfortable. I'm over it.

I noticed that Libertarians (and the RW in general) seem to be pretty big on that type of backwards mindset and making light of racial/gender issues. And this is a pretty heavily-trafficked political site, so I'm guessing there are plenty of those type of infiltrators posting, trying to demoralize the Left and drive wedges between people. It makes things tricky trying to figure out who is for real on here and who only wants to cause trouble. One poster made a good point earlier, though, when he/she said that a good way to spot an infiltrator is to see if they show up at all on threads that are either not about Obama, or when he does something that most progressives support.

It's the three electric supermarket scooter riders of the acopalypse....
FUD: Spreaders of Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
DOUBT.
You know it when you see it. It often "comes from the impeccable-liberal-credentials FAR left" -- from someone whose mini-bio reads "Off-the-grid pioneer; grow all my own food, built my micro-tree-house by hand. Go to town in my llama-pulled wagon. Connect to the net via handmade wooden modem powered by my feet on a bicycle generator..." or someone with a major Paulbot or Nader slant, affecting a faux anarchist-y or "I won't respect anyone's authorit-teh" juvenile attitude (until Mom runs out of Hot Pockets, I guess).
They will often accuse others of not being sufficiently liberal, they'll throw around words like "corporatist" and "oligarchy" as if they understand their meaning, they're first out of the gate to criticize Obama no matter WHAT he does (Obama had a Father's Day breakfast at the White House....I can't help but notice he didn't invite any GRANDFATHERS to the thing...thanks a LOT, Obama!) and they're somewhat annoying. They aren't sharp enough to rise to the level of insufferable, usually, but the template is usually the same. Often, they'll have screen names that sound so comically Far Left that they sound like they were invented by a ghost writer for Limpballs. MIRT catches a lot of them, but they're like gum stuck to your shoe--hard to shift!

Although MLK, Jr., for example, was against Communism (but no fool about capitalism) but he was called a Communist and still is by the Birchers, like Obama?
Are blacks genetically Commie, is that what they're saying? Exactly what political affiliation did blacks have before Marx, Lenin, Trotsky, etc?
Blacks have been in America long before those guys were born. And how can they be anti-American when they were here way, way before 1776?

To them, it's bad enough when Americans do it but they'll be damned if some "furriner" is going to remind them too.
There is also a small group of non-Americans that are as "displeased" with the president as they are. I have yet to see a single post telling any of these people that their opinion is not wanted here.

No, that OP was about other very vocal Obama supporters who are not Americans or don't live in America. But when I agreed with someone's comment that the OP has never said a word about DUers from other countries that don't support this president, suddenly it was some great "reveal" that I was an Australian.
Check out that thread. You got folks TELLING other people about my nationality, or my health care status as if they know any damn thing about me OR my status. The "I'm not stalking you, I just feel the need to respond to you in practically every thread you post in with a handy batch of links to your posts which I have convinced myself will discredit you but don't do a damn thing but make me look like somebody who DESPERATELY needs a fucking life."
The two links that confirm (!!1one) my Australian status is 1) with me saying that I've been "Down Under for too long" (do people that are actually FROM a country say they've been there too long?? GD says yes! :facepalm and 2) the one that says PLAIN AS DAY that I am "currently" in Australia. That is their great proof that I am Australian. And keep in mind, this was AFTER two posters posted a link from five years ago that I noted I was born and raised in Atlanta.

These folks, who break their arms patting themselves on the back every day with how "worldly," "sophisticated" and "informed" have apparently lost all ability to comprehend that someone can live in another country and still be a citizen of the United States!
So somehow, ACA has absolutely NOTHING to do with me. Never mind that my taxes help pay for it. Never mind that I voted for the man who's implemented it -- TWICE. Never mind that my family will be directly impacted by it. I am not allowed to discuss it because my backside is not physically located in the country at this moment.
And I don't know if you saw the OP in question but folks are in that thread discussing my health care status as if they know the first damn thing about me. I could slap them in the face and run off and they'd go "who in the hell was that??!" but somehow, they know what health care policies I'm qualified for.
Between that shit, the "I'm not stalking you, I just refuse to leave you alone and am constantly searching for your posts so that I try to embarrass you even though the only person I have EVER embarrassed with this behavior has been myself;" the "I have proof she's Australians!1 See this post that says she is CURRENTLY living there! (31,849 posts)how do you like Australia? I have a college buddy that went there to play basketball (until he could get on in the NBA) ... that was 20+ years ago and last I heard he's still there. He loved it.
Number23
(24,544 posts)I think socially, Australia is about 30-50 years behind the U.S. I know that alot of folks here love it because it's got stronger gun control policies and appears to be more liberal on many issues. But Australia is as expensive as shit, still has some fairly significant racial issues, and I do feel is more sexist than the U.S.
Don't even get me started on the media representation. My babies can watch Australian tv all day and barely see a single person of color. Which is one of the reasons I don't complain too hard that so much of the television and movies are imported from the U.S. and the UK. But it is clean, safe and a remarkable place to raise children. I am going to miss it when we leave.
Oh, and they LOVE Americans. Which I guess doesn't relate to me because apparently I'm not one anymore??

(53,661 posts)And this about the issue at hand:
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)I went through this same BS during my latter years of posting here.
Some of the things I was told by many allegedly well-informed DUers:
I had deliberately hidden the fact that I live in Canada, even though my DU profile stated that I was an American residing in Toronto from the day I registered here, and was never changed.
I was lying about having voted in US elections, being ineligible to do so as I do not reside in the States. (That was especially surprising, considering all of the coverage given to absentee ballots during the Gore/Bush recount fiasco. Who did they think those ballots were coming from?)
I was breaking Canadian law by being a recipient of their healthcare coverage, because only Canadian citizens are eligible for coverage. (Utter BS)
I had 'relinquished' my US citizenship by virtue of having chosen to live elsewhere, along with my right to voice any opinion about US politics or policies.
I was no longer a US citizen because I earn an income and pay taxes in Canada.
I had "left the US in a huff" after Dubya's inauguration, and therefore had no right to speak about what was going on under his presidency, having 'abandoned' my countrymen during bad times. (I moved to Toronto in 1974 because my then-husband had been offered a dream job here - politics had nothing to do with it.)
There were other accusations - equally ridiculous.
As has already been noted by many, it is only Obama-supporting non-residents and non-US citizens who are told their opinions are not welcome here. Those who opine regularly about what a mess the US is in as a result of Obama's presidency are welcomed with open arms.
The far left fringe element on this site are exactly like the Teabaggers in their rhetoric, and their insistence on spewing misinformation and holding it out as fact. Sadly, they - just like the Teabaggers - are too devoid of self-awareness to notice the blatantly obvious similarities.
Number23
(24,544 posts)I'm reading your post and dying laughing. It is astonishing what a group of people who believe that they and they alone possess all of the wisdom in this world are capable of spewing forth on this board. I am still shaking my head over the poster who feels in any way qualified to discuss what health care I am privy to as if he knows me from a hole in a goddamned wall. I see they did the same shit to you as well.
Freepers/Birthers/Tea Partiers have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on these imbeciles. In fact, if you threw them all in a room together and turned out the lights and let them start their respective spews, you wouldn't be able to tell them apart.
All I have to say is, if these people represent the 15% of Democrats that don't support this president (and let's be honest, the folks doing this shit are not the president's supporters but some of his loudest, most ignorant and unhinged critics and I strongly suspect aren't even Democrats) then there is no doubt in my mind why DU is the only place in the entire world that they have any influence.

By and large, there are only a handful of posters still here who can stomach the BS that gets posted on a regular basis, and counteract it as necessary - and I admire your tenacity in doing so.

(31,849 posts)Were any of those "well informed DUers" also chiming their" wisdom in on Number 2 ' thread?
Number23
(24,544 posts)YES. Much overlap between the two groups.
Specifically take note of the ever so "special" individuals who are talking about my health care status in Australia as if they know me, know the Australian health system or have one fucking clue what they are talking about and the one talking about how absurd it would be for people to go to a French web site and talk about their health programs.
It's astonishing. One person, who freely admits he doesn't live in the States though he's an American, has no qualms about speaking for me and what I'm eligible for in the Australian health program as if he has the first fucking clue about either with no repercussions but somehow I, as an American, am not justified in speaking about the American health care system. Aint that some shit?

I envy that you were able to put this place in your rear view mirror and keep going. As Drunken Irishmen said the other day, DU is the place where the president is a piece of shit and the first lady is clueless. This place is an incredibly bad joke and has been for a while.
NanceGreggs
(27,814 posts)You're SO right about the sig line - and DU!
I thought Drunken Irishman's OP was brilliant in its brief and precise summation of what this site has become.
It's so sad to see, though. I remember reading the DU statement of purpose before I signed-up - it was described as a safe sanctuary from the constant Dem-bashing in the "liberal media". And now it has become the very thing that it once fought and defended against.
I stayed here much longer than I should have - hoping against hope that DU's original purpose would somehow rise from the ashes. But that's not going to happen. It is what it is - warring factions fighting over a tiny piece of internet property that is losing ground in traffic stats day by day.
By the time one faction or the other declares victory, they'll be down to six posters - and they won't even be able to celebrate their victory together - because they'll all have each other on Ignore.
In any event, it was good connecting with you again. You're still the on-line friend I would most like to meet in real life - too bad you're an Australian pretending to be a US citizen!!!

So yeah, this whole, "you aren't American so you can't talk about shit" is just the flip side of the Freeper coin. It's an embarrassment. They sound just like Freepers who think that Obama should have been ineligible because he spent some of his childhood years in Indonesia. I mean, they sound JUST LIKE these imbeciles.
I have a friend here born and raised in Alabama but has been in Australia for ten years. Her mother died of breast cancer when she was young and she's got two younger sisters, one of whom has been recently diagnosed. When ACA was passed, she practically wept because it meant that her sister would be covered for the first time in years. I dare ANYONE to tell my friend that she shouldn't be happy or talk about ACA.
The fact that some people here find it so damned unusual that Americans travel the world is one of the many, many reasons I find them so moronic. The entire world is full of Americans that have traveled and live in other places. Some do it for 3 years. Some five. Some 20. But the idea that somehow you stop caring about your homeland when your entire family is there or even when you're still paying taxes is something I think is a surefired way to show how narrow and ignorant a person is. One of the 4 gillion reasons their "advice" on how to run the US government winds up in the trash.
Let me get my church fan because you have TRULY just broken it down.

(89,249 posts)because his daughter lives here and is married to an american. he also spends a lot of time at the native american reservations . he has a really good knowledge of native american history and culture. i doubt many americans know much about it and i include myself in that.
we have seen from threads on privilege that living here doesn't mean people know much about how others live.
these people are most offended that there are people who like OBama. of course we aren't going to like it when people lie about him. i notice the only people who offered actual advice and solutions on that gross thread were those who did support the PRes. the rest just complained about how there were people who did not hate him.
btw, i get this regularly from wingnut idiots. when they are proved wrong on something they always go back to the "why do you worhsip him" bs. of course they also include the "you like him because he is black" because on those sites they don't get banned for it.

(24,544 posts)I went into the thread, it had 98 recs. By the time I finished reading the posts, it was up to 111. Though some may try their hardest to claim DU as Discontented Faux Left Libertarians R Us, there are still quite a few Dems and their supporters around.

(31,820 posts)To get this thread hidden I think.
I saw it on the ACA/Girlfriend/Obama Sucks No He Doesn't threads going on in GD. Somewhere in there she/he is upset because once again - reading comprehension was an epic fail.
And whines there - yet no apology ANYWHERE to you for that vicious snideness against you - by her/him
The she/he and her/him is because I always thought that poster was male but some folks are indicating the poster is female. I dunno - just trying to cover all of my bases.

(24,544 posts)I've gotten so many PMs about that one and her exchange with me it's not even funny. And far too many of them contained some variation of the phrase "that raccoon knew exactly what he was doing."

(31,820 posts)How the raccoon is playing innocent and light - like said raccoon didn't get in the damn garbage can and leave the garbage all over my driveway. Yeaaaaah DU!

(21,043 posts)Oh? You're not talking about him now?
I think you might be confused.
I'm one of "the ones" who claims that to attack Obama is to attack THE WRONG PEOPLE. I'm one of "the ones" who say that when you attack Obama because he isn't making your dreams come true asap, you are attacking THE WRONG PEOPLE. I'm one of "the ones" who say that when you attack Obama because he's not instantly able to fix for you ALL the damage done by Repukes over more than 3 decades, you are attacking THE WRONG PEOPLE.
Again, you are under the mistaken impression that President Obama is either emperor and has sovereign powers, or that he can pull tricks better than David Copperfield.
As for you being a birther, I'm never one to say that. However, if you attack Obama, ACA, and such, you ARE engaging in the same, identical tactics as the Republicans, and using the same terminology.
If that upsets you, there's not a heck of a lot I can do about that, can I?

(24,544 posts)no idea why you are posting this to me.

But the opposite of the rest of your post is not what this OP is about at all. Perhaps you are on the wrong link here?

(140 posts)Right now, they have a Conservative Prime Minister who is shamelessly leading the country down the road to corporatism. They don't think it could happen in Canada, but it IS happening.
JustAnotherGen
(31,820 posts)That Americans who want to comment on anything other than America should mind their own business too.
Example:
The Italian Justice system (the Meredith Kercher murder fiasco) - where in America black kids get blown away and white/hispanic men walk around smiling and laughing about how they got away with it. Yet right here at DU white 'liberals' truly believe we are in a post racial society and others in the group believe that we black folks ought to shut up about racial privilege.
Ain't that some shit?
America has it's own problems - maybe we ought to stop worrying about Oligarchs, billionaires and plutocrats in Russia -
And start focusing on the New Jim Crow and how it starts as young as pre-school - i.e. black little girls getting suspended at alarming rates from effin' pre school.
Even more of - Ain't that some shit?

(24,544 posts)Now YOU get to throw the mic this time.
Half the posts in this forum are about what's going on in other countries and I have never seen anyone have a problem with that. If they did, they'd be laughed off of the Internet as they should be.
But somehow, non-Americans (and apparently American citizens not currently in the U.S.) don't have the right to talk about the U.S. as we sit around and talk endlessly about what's going on in other parts of the world as well as any influence that the US may have had there. What the fuck is going on around here??

(24,544 posts)What is going on there? Do you think it was a stroke or something? I mean what EXACTLY is going on with this person?
Did you ever watch the PowerPuff Girls? Do you remember the bad guy was a monkey named MoJo JoJo who talked EXACTLY like that person. Lots of rambling, repetition, could never ever get his point out in anything resembling a succinct fashion.
Examples:
Excuse me sir, but can you direct me to the location of where I can locate some eggs for I would like to purchase them so that I can take them home with me and I can eat them today.
and
That's all just well enough, because in reality there is only room enough in this world for one Mojo Jojo. One shall be the number of Mojo Jojos in the world, and the number of Mojo Jojos in the world shall be one. Two Mojo Jojos is too many, and three is right out. So the only Mojo Jojo there is room for in the world shall be me.

I mean if that doesn't sound exactly like The Rambler (TM) then I don't know what does.

(82,383 posts)When they claim Canadian opinions don't matter, but even more ridiculous is the case with you or Nance Greggs. Americans living abroad are also not to comment! Just shows how little they have to base opinions on that they have to resort to that.

(24,544 posts)And what's so ridiculous is these same folks spend so much time going on about how horrible and evil the U.S. is and how desperately they want to go someplace else. Someplace like... CANADA!!!!

(89,249 posts)that are more socialist if OBama became pres or was re-elected.
these people have so much in common. in the end they are the only ones who hold these anti obama views. it's why you see similar talking points among them even though some claim to be on the left.
right now i'm seeing a bunch of posts angry at why bush was allowed to be treated badly on du and obama is not.
