All this crying about the audacity of mentioning white privilege and insisting race is a "settled issue." It's driving me nuts, and I'm a white person.

(51,053 posts)I feel pretty certain each is mentally justifying some habitual action by saying, "No, there's no problem with me doing THAT in real life. I won't hear otherwise!"
Interesting how it all comes out after a while when one posts here.

(83,966 posts)Tone deaf people seem to be disabled only with music: they can fully interpret the prosody or intonation of human speech.[citation needed] Tone deafness has a strong negative correlation with belonging to societies with tonal languages, potentially evincing that accurate pitch discrimination is learned or naturally selected. A correlation between allele frequencies and linguistic typological features has been recently discovered, supporting the latter hypothesis.
Tone deafness is also associated with other musical-specific impairments such as the inability to keep time with music (the lack of rhythm) or to remember or recognize a song. These disabilities can appear separately, but some research shows that they more often appear in tone-deaf people.Experienced musicians, such as W. A. Mathieu, have addressed tone deafness in adults as correctable with training.

They can not keep up with time. Their clocks seem to have stopped and they are not willing to see past that. We sing yet they can not here the relative pitch changes.

(51,053 posts)interesting, in a sense separate from this conversation.
As for these guys: I tend to assume they are "get off my lawn" types having trouble keeping up with the time as you say. But some of them have let slip clues about their ages, and those that I have noted are very young. Like early twenties. This gives me a picture of some guy guffawing about racist and sexist comments with his bar buddies, then coming here and reading objections to just that kind of comment, and trying to justify his behavior in his own mind. I think with these guys it boils down to rank ignorance and inexperience of the world of the kind we assume DUers should have out grown.

I had to say this to the last one. I think i'm done.
77. Too bad you find the debate around the oppression of blacks by whites ridiculous.
It is going to happen until we get treated fairly. Period. And we will not be sugar coating things to make the majority comfortable. We ourselves are uncomfortable day and night and until that stops we are going to speak out loudly and proudly. Everyday. Welcome to the New America y'all. Ain't nobody shutting up and sparing you our voices again.
Women.. We will not shut up. Ever!!! That horse left the barn.
Black people... We will not use words to make you feel better about the degradation we suffer on a daily basis at the hands of the white majority. We will not negotiate with you about which words we will use to speak our pain.
You job is to end the racism in this country by standing with us, not arguing semantics with us or diminishing our experience.
It is not your job to define words for us or to tell us to words things differently.
If you want to tell us how to say things to make white men comfortable, i have a list of a billion things white men say on a daily basis that make me uncomfortable. Work on them first before you start lecturing the oppressed on how to speak out.
You are lecturing the wrong folks here.
Time for me to give it up turn it loose. Like envogue.

(37,457 posts)I'm as white as they come, and I KNOW there is. I've seen it all my life. The deniers and defensive ones on DU have no leg to stand on.
BainsBane
(53,093 posts)They refuse to pay attention to what people mean when they talk about white privilege and insist it means a whole array of things no one claims: like judging someone based entirely on their skin color, or insisting no one else can be discriminated against for any reason. It's one strawman after another.

(22,336 posts)Unless you have only ever lived in a town where everyone is white, maybe. Then maybe it's never become evident. Maybe that's the problem with some deniers. They have never notice that they are treated differently because everyone around them has also had white privilege.

(53,093 posts)It really is a lost cause. Some people can't bring themselves to care or think about anyone who isn't exactly like them.

(13,324 posts)That's my diagnosis as well. Sad, but what can we do about them?
BainsBane
(53,093 posts)They are who they are. You can't change people. Some will go to the new site. Quite a collection of Men's Group types are setting up shop there.
The most troubling part of their worldview is that there is zero distance between their own views and what they consider absolute truth. The idea that I may have this view and you another is something they can't conceive. If you don't think like them, you must be a troll or a paid shill. It's a Positivist worldview, with no awareness of the race, class, and gender assumptions that frame their understanding of fact and truth.

(53,093 posts)I just didn't realize how bad it was. Of course the same ones that rail against feminists are hostile to discussions of race as well.

(20,450 posts)Many of us were right. We just didn't know that Bill and Hillary Clinton would play to that racism, but they did. I can never forgive the Clintons for that. But they knew it, too! They knew that racism existed in the Democratic Party, else they would not have started down the racism path. Bill is from the South. He knew what he was doing! Again, I will never forgive the Clintons for that. To this day, there are still wounds from the primaries; there are still Democrats who hate everything Obama and I believe much of that is because he's black. I will never back down from that belief.

(31,849 posts)(not that it keeps me up at night) is how the hell could anyone (claiming to be a "liberal" read that piece and NOT see it as, either a parody piece or for the racist crap it is. Reading the posts, that cohort clearly failed to see it as either ... and took it as a serious discussion piece.

(89,279 posts)the thing is one could have a serious discussion about this and it has been posted about before.
but they decide to go for the obviously racist, offensive one.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)I would speak loudly that there are white liberals who are very racist. I would shout that there are racists right here on DU. And for that, I'd get all kinds of nasty replies, some people daring me to prove it. I must PROVE racism? Wait, I have to prove it on a Democratic Party, seemingly left-of-center discussion forum? Really?
One not terribly unlike that was hidden on the new site, which is supposed to include conservatives.

(22,336 posts)Also known as the Oprah argument. If there is any wealthy African American person, there is no privilege. This is an offshoot of the belief that we shouldn't talk about racism until there are no poor white people.

(22,336 posts)Here in Michigan the biggest decider of whether someone is a Democrat is how they feel about unions. Now I am a huge union supporter, and my parents were both union members, but not all union supporters are progressive in other ways.
