If you are a white person who feels guilty about not reading books by black authors, this is a good place to start. Some of the stories are better than others, but the subjects are so varied that anybody is likely to find one that fits their personality.

For me, “Visitation” sounds so much like a situation that happened in my own family that I thought it was real.

The reason I believe the author knows what she is talking about is that she lectured me, in a writing forum, for being clueless about how a black person would act.

But you won’t feel like an outsider reading something you shouldn’t.

By the way, short books don’t get the respect they deserve. Neither do story collections. They have advantages in this day of short attention spans. They may be a coming genre.

Heck, just start with the last story “Around the Table” It’s last because it is the best. It will make you read the rest.

BTW, Lauren, my copy did not have page numbers, but in a short book it doesn't matter that much.
