What Fiction are you reading this week, December 1, 2024?

Welcome December

Still reading The Grey Wolf by Louise Penny. I suspect her working with Hillary Clinton sparked a desire to get more into politics and this book is sure doing that. Not all her fans are happy about it, but I feel the time was ripe and I'm finding it quite riveting. We're not the only country being taken over by crooks.

I was happy to learn that my library finally got several Fern Michaels audio books so I'm listening to the Lost and Found series. All antiques have a story and when a brother-and-sister team uncover dangerous information hidden in one, it sets them off on a journey into a mysterious past.

What books will you start off with this December?

Every Last Lie, by Mary Kubica. It is about the mental meanderings of a woman whose husband dies in a car crash, leaving her with two small children and few resources.

I am not reading much fiction these days. I am not reading much at all. But when I do read, it is mainly non-fiction.

Always happy to hear from you. That book sounds really familiar, but I'm not finding it on my already read list. Maybe a similar plot...

Reading fiction helps me maintain my sanity. I think... Seems that way, anyway.

(electromagntic pulse) wipes out all electricity, Final Day. Both books 1 One Second After, and 2 One Year After, were riveting, informative reads on physical and emotional outcome from such and event.

In between, had to read a lighter love story The Library of Lost Love, Norie Clarke. Author mixes movies from Notting Hill to You've Got Mail, for a new story that includes a fun premise of going off-line to actually write letters and post notes in the paper, what a concept!

"...the government announces that it's ceding large portions of the country to China and Mexico. The Constitution is no longer in effect, and what's left of the U.S. Army has been deployed to suppress rebellion in the remaining states."
What's old is new again.
I can see why you'd want something lighter. That sounds lovely. To be released in Feb.

Missing the ‘classic’ Reacher effect. More like a shaggy dog thriller. Lots of moving bits and action. Quick nods to Reacher’s quirks but feels flat and uninterested.

Readable but didn’t really grab me.

Ouch.

I wonder if there is an editor who could step in and help salvage the series.

An excellent read about three women coping with the death of their sister. Now I’m starting None of This Is True by Lisa Jewel. My mom hated it, which is a good sign that I’ll love it.

Thank you for hosting this amazing group!

THE LAST GENERATION OF MANKIND ON EARTH
Without warning, giant silver ships from deep space appear in the skies above every major city on Earth.
They are manned by the Overlords...mysterious creatures from an alien race who soon take over control of the world.

I guess it turns out that was non-fiction.

It was a wild ride, too .. fast paced, twists and turns, not knowing who the bad guy is until the very end, hair raising near death experiences..... from Amazon description:

Art recovery expert Jamie Saintclair thought he knew his grandfather, but when he stumbles upon the old man's lost diary he's astonished to find that the gentle Anglican clergyman was a decorated hero who had served in the Special Air Service in World War Two. And his grandfather has one more surprise for him. Sewn in to the endpaper of the journal is a strange piece of Nazi symbolism.

This simple discovery will launch him on a breathless chase across Europe and deep into Germany's dark past. There are some who will kill to find that which is lost, and although he doesn't know it, Saintclair holds the key to its hiding place.

Currently reading: Murder in Williamstown, by Kerry Greenwood. A Phryne Fisher murder mystery. Yes, the fabulous Miss Fisher from the BBC/PBS series. If you have not watched this series, you need to
Anyway the Amazon description:

Bookending her pleasant dinner with her new friend Jeoffrey, Phryne makes two disturbing discoveries: first, a discarded opium pipe in the park, and later the body of a Chinese man on the beach--cause of death not apparent, yet ultimately ruled a homicide. Shortly thereafter, the teenaged sister-in-law of Phryne's longtime lover Lin Chung disappears from her home. But when one of Jeoffrey's colleagues is murdered in front of a houseful of guests at a Chinese-themed party he is hosting, Phryne can't help but wonder--are the incidents all related somehow? And who on earth has been leaving notes in her letterbox, warning her to "REPENT" and that "THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH"--? In addition to the formidable and fashionable Phryne, this clever mystery once again features Phryne's three wards with their own mysteries to solve: Ruth and Jane, tracking an embezzler at the Institute, and Tinker, whose help Phryne enlists to uncover the author of the threatening missives.

I love Phryne Fisher!!! Since I have seen the series, I can envision her in the fabulous fashions she wore!!!
