N.B.A. Player Malik Beasley Charged in Federal Gambling Inquiry
Two former professional basketball players have been charged with federal sports gambling crimes, becoming the latest N.B.A. players to be targeted in a sweeping crackdown on illicit sports betting.
Malik Beasley, a professional basketball player who most recently played for the Detroit Pistons, and Ed Davis, a former player who had been Mr. Beasleys teammate, conspired to rig Mr. Beasleys performance in upcoming N.B.A. games, according to an indictment unsealed on Monday in Federal District Court in Brooklyn.
Federal prosecutors said the two men conspired with four others, including an N.B.A. agent, Paolo Zamorano, who were also charged in the indictment.
Mr. Beasley, prosecutors said, took bribes for deliberately scoring fewer points, recording more rebounds and taking other steps to benefit people who had placed specific bets on his performance in games.
