Australian Parliament to apologise to Peter Norman

Who I hear you ask? What has this got to do with sport? Olympic buffs may have heard of him; for those of you who haven't Peter Norman was the third man on the dais at the 1968 Mexico Games alongside Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the medal presentation following the 200 metres final.

He subsequently qualified for the Munich Games but was banned by the Australian Olympic Committee. He then retired from athletics.

He remained committed to human rights his entire life up until his death in 2006. Both Tommie Smith and John Carlos attended his funeral, gave eulogies and were coffin bearers. He still holds the Australian record over 200 metres.

Like many others I only learnt his story following his death - up until then I had no idea the third man on the dais was Australian. Recognised too late, but recognition finally.
