Texas State Representative creates a bill to revive the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry

Expansion has caused some of college football’s greatest and oldest rivalries to disappear much to the chagrin of its fans and apparently, even some lawmakers.

Ryan Guillen, a Democrat from House District 31, filed a bill Monday that would require Texas and Texas A&M to rekindle their annual football rivalry. The rivalry was put on indefinite hold after Texas A&M moved to the SEC last season. The rivalry dates back to 1894 and up until last year, the schools had played annually since 1915.

"This game is as much a Texas tradition as cowboy boots and barbeque," Guillen, an A&M graduate, said in a statement to ESPN. "The purpose of the bill is to put the 'eyes of Texas upon' our two greatest universities to restore this sacred Texas tradition.

"I think the people of Texas want a game, and we're trying to get them one."

Aside from the fact that I wish politicians (even Democratic ones) would pay attention to more important things, I'm so pissed off at A&M that I wish they would move to some butt-fuck out-of-Texas SEC town.

Texas A&M president reacts to bill that would force UT-A&M football renewal

Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin issued this statement this morning after a state representative filed a bill Monday night that would require Texas A&M and Texas to resume their football rivalry:

“We remain hopeful that the game may continue one day through the normal scheduling process. Having said that, we, of course, will follow any specific direction from the Legislature.”

A&M has consistently said that it would like to continue the series as a nonconference game after its move to the SEC from the Big 12. In the meanwhile, it’s possible that the Aggies will schedule a Thanksgiving game with an SEC opponent, Loftin has said. Texas has already moved on in replacing the Aggies with current Big 12 members as their Turkey Day opponents.

Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds acknowledged to me before the final game of the series, on Thanksgiving 2011, that the series would resume eventually. But Texas has cited that its schedule is already full for upcoming seasons, so it’s been unclear what could transpire to revive the series.

“It will be played again sometime, somewhere down the road,” Dodds said in 2011. “When and if, it will have to be the right situation. It will have to be positive for us.”
