Bowling legend Don Carter dies

<snip>

"Bowling legend Don Carter, a Hall of Famer renowned in South Florida because of the bowling centers that bear his name, died in his Miami home Thursday night after battling pneumonia and emphysema. He was 85.

Carter was one of the first stars of the Professional Bowling Association in the 1950s and 1960s, winning seven PBA titles, including five major championships.

A native of St. Louis, Carter moved to Miami in 1972 with his wife Paula – also a bowling Hall of Famer – after retiring from the bowling tour because of knee injuries.

Carter was selected as the Greatest Bowler of All-time in a 1970 Bowling Magazine poll, ranked second in Bowling Magazine’s “20 Greatest Bowlers of the 20th Century” poll in 2000, and was voted the 11th greatest PBA player of all time as part of the organization’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2009."
