49ers' Aldon Smith booked on DUI, pot charges
Niners linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested Friday morning in San Jose on suspicion of drunken driving and marijuana possession, authorities said, marking the latest trouble for the star player.
Sgt. Heather Randol said officers responded at 7:02 a.m. to the Silver Creek area in southeastern San Jose. Smith, who lives nearby, had collided with a fixed object while driving alone in a pickup truck, she said.
He was not injured. Photos taken at the scene showed damage to a tree.
Smith left Santa Clara County Jail after making $5,250 bail, records show, and later participated in the team's afternoon practice. County sheriff's officials said Smith was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence and marijuana possession.

I'm sure no one cares about the dope except the NFL, but the DUI -- the second in a year -- is highly alarming. Also alarming is the laissezfaire attitude by coach Jim Harbaugh as reported by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Ann Killon:
If Smith had hit a kid on her way to school instead of a tree, would he still get to play on Sunday?
If Smith steps on the field on Sunday, here's the message the 49ers will give to Smith and the rest of their players: We don't care what you do if you perform on the field. We don't really care if you're not "above reproach."
SNIP
(The) next time Harbaugh wants to take the high road, the next time he acts holier-than-thou about some other team's transgressions, it's going to be difficult to stomach.
I agree.
