I don't know about this situation but it usually has to do with the salary cap

A player can be signed to two 10 day contracts and then either released or signed for the rest of the season.

It's to cover an instance where a player has a sprained ankle or some other short term injury.

The greatest American born hockey player's #9 jersey will be retired by the Dallas Stars on March 8th of this year.
