University of Texas announcer Wally Pryor, ‘Voice of the Longhorns,’ dies at 86
Wally Pryor, the Voice of the Longhorns, whose smooth, deadpan style became synonymous with University of Texas football and basketball for nearly 40 years, died Saturday. He was 86.
Pryors voice was known to cut through the crowds of tens of thousands at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. His quick announcement of quarter encapsulated his straight delivery that was touched with a tinge of humor.
You cant say he was no nonsense, because there was plenty of nonsense, but at the football games he did his job, said longtime friend Paul Weyland, who emceed the Chilympiad in San Marcos with Pryor for years.
Fans became well versed with Pryors understated hijinks over the years. He turned many of the Longhorn faithful into proxy fans of Slippery Rock University by breaking in with score updates from the small Pennsylvania college. And Pryor would always be sure to let the crowd know that his good friend Hondo Crouch, a former mayor of Luckenbach, needed to once again pick up his drunken grandmother from Scholz Garten or maybe the Broken Spoke.
