Richard Sherman calls NFL banning the N-word “an atrocious idea”

Count Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman among those who think the NFL would be wrong to pass a new rule against players using the N-word on the field.

Asked about the proposal to make use of the N-word an automatic 15-yard penalty, Sherman told Peter King of TheMMQB.com that the NFL would be making a serious mistake if it passed such a rule.

“It’s an atrocious idea,” said Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman. “It’s almost racist, to me. It’s weird they’re targeting one specific word. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then?”

Sherman said the N-word is commonly used among NFL players.

Or are we pretending that a guy who got a communication degree from Stanford wouldn't understand that?

People are fucked. But I think it should only be a five yard penalty.

You hear the n word...that's what's pervasive, so pervasive he says we should leave it alone.

He says it is racist to single out that word. I tend to agree given the reappropriation of the term. But even if you don't agree with him, you don't need to make up shit about what he is saying.

Where does it saying calling someone a kyke wouldn't be considered abusive language...this is adding the n word to those considerd abusive language, which kyke, bundle of wood, etc would already be considered abusive, the n word is not and phuckwads like Sherman can't understand that....I know this roided out loud-mouth is your new hero, but honestly.

But I don't have a hard on to try and make him look like an roided out, ignorant meathead, either.

Are you ever going to address the concept of reappropriation? Should it be a penalty if one black player calls another black play "the n word" when that is completely fine between them and they see the reappropriation of the word?

He got lucky like Ryan Braun and got the drug test thrown out, but given the history of athletes who fail drug tests once later admitting they did do drugs, and the number of his teammates who also failed drug tests and the miniscule penalties assessed for using drugs, it's likely that he does use performance enhancing drugs.

Sherman, again like his teammates, claimed that he failed a drug test for Adderall, but since the NFL doesn't release information about failed drug tests, there's no reason to believe them. Especially in light of his seemingly roid rage fueled interview after that playoff game.

And he's absolutely wrong about allowing the n word in the NFL. It's kind of amusing that the same guy who claimed that people who called him a thug were using a polite version of the n word and were thus racist is now defending the use of the n word.

Especially in light of the issue with the Miami Dolphins the NFL needs to do more the keep the league's image clean. Having players freely tossing around racial profanity doesn't help that.

Athletes say the n-word all the time. I honestly don't care too much whether other people say it; it's just a word. They might as well ban all profanity like Sherman said, if they're going to be banning the n-word.
If the NFL is really serious about rule changes, though, I suggest that they change the rule where a player gets penalized for retaliating during a shoving match. The penalty should only apply to the aggressor. If a player gets caught rough-housing after a play, he should get flagged.
