ESPN to televise first NFL playoff game ever on cable

The league said today that ESPN will air a wild card game during the first weekend of the playoffs in early January. The milestone game will mark the first postseason NFL game on pay TV — and should draw astronomical ratings for the cable universe.

NBC will also televise its first Divisional playoff game since acquiring the Sunday night package in 2006.

Fans without cable will lose a wildcard game (unless it's within their viewing area, I assume), but they will be able to see Thursday night contests on CBS. I'm not a huge fan of TNF (I'd like it better if the teams playing were coming off byes), but I expect the match-ups will be better than what were televised on NFL Network.
