That didn't last long...Venus out in the first round...Garber, I think, at ESPN said she's a force to be reckoned with at the US Open...I doubt it. If nothing else, this shows she won't have the stamina.

(64,933 posts)The talked about the bengals practicing at a local high school near us.

(56,177 posts)Don't they know that "emporium" news should always be reported first???
Series-ly, Cincy is one of the bigger tournaments out there...pretty much all the top players enter

(16,364 posts)and don't have a bye, don't fare too well the following week. Probably Tsonga also. Damn tough sport...

(56,177 posts)muggy august...makes, IMHO, the US Open the most difficult of the slams...the conditions really wear the players out.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Tsonga is gone...that's why I won't put money on him for th US Open...while he's obviously had a letdown, the US Open is two weeks and there will be highs along the way and you can't let up...he does.

(56,177 posts)Petra may go down again in the second roud, and interestingly, Sam Stosur is again Serena's second round opponent in this tournament, just like Rogers...
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Upsets only I shall post...Petra, Berdych and Dmitrov lost...hmmmm
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Roger escaped...looks like David might, too.

(56,177 posts)If you look at my posts from the Rogers Cup, I noted Djoker would not be a factor at the US Open...he lost again today, third round, to Tommy Robredo, after escaping yesterday...he's lost focus, and he's not getting it back anytime soon.
Unfortunately, the Limey Bastard won, 7-6 in the third, but the good news is Stan won...Roger yet to play.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)He had to make me nervous, of course, but won 6-3 in the third. Only David and Mikael are still playing...David is up a set and a break.

(77,091 posts)So annoying, and he's not even that insightful.

(56,177 posts)Do you ever see the tweets they post on the tennis section of ESPN? He tweets something every 3 seconds...like I said, he's too intense to ever think of going away...

(29,711 posts)And how bout the American and Canadian doubles team? Won Wimbledon and beat the Bryan boys to do it too...how good are the going to be? And John Isner.....dang. But all this, just a pre-US open primer.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)There have been weird results last week and this week, on both the men's and women's sides, notably Grigo and Eugenie Bouchard fizzling.

(29,711 posts)Hope they all come to play in a couple of weeks.

(56,177 posts)And just getting these tournaments in for the hardcourt experience.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Roger beat the Limey Bastard in staright sets...was down 1-4 in the second, ended up storming back and winning 7-5. Andy's days are over.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)Roger v David; Serena v Ana. Ana is playing better these days, which is nice to see.
marmar
(77,091 posts)..... honestly I thought the two of them would never get it back.
And Roger is looking vintage. If Djoker is still on a post-Wimby mental vacation, and Rafa doesn't show up, he's got a real shot at the U.S. Open.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)When Caroline was #1 I thought she might sneak in and win a slam, but then she really lost it, as did Ana, she really couldn't pay to win a match for a while. Funny with all the talk about the new up and coming women that the ones who have a shot now are those who have been around for a while.
I don't think Djoker has a prayer, and no one other than Roger has really looked good in these pre-Open tournaments. Rafroid is doping as I write, but he may decide he hasn't doped enough and pull out completely.

(72,790 posts)Federerererer defeats Ferrer 6-3, 1-6, 6-2. Good match. Was pulling for Ferrer.
Serena defeated Ivanovic in women's final
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)I was surprised it was that close, was also surprised Ana didn't make the women's final closer.
bigwillq
(72,790 posts)like the way he plays; tough, gritty.
It's all in Ana's head, imo, especially against Serena.

(56,177 posts)I used to like David until all that roid rage of his.

(32,102 posts)Roger Federer made $638,850 for a week of practice.
Oh, he also notched his sixth Western & Southern Open title and 80th career tournament win with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 victory over David Ferrer at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on Sunday.
Eyeing his 18th Grand Slam title when the U.S. Open starts next week in New York, Federer thought about passing up the Cincinnati tournament and went into it without too many expectations.
"I need to be smart about how much I play, when I play, and how do I feel. So I waited for Monday, Tuesday to see how I played," Federer said after his victory. "In practice I felt like I was recovering quickly, and give it a go. Play with less pressure, more with the confidence, and you never know how you end up feeling midway through the week."

(56,177 posts)Also, see the post below...Rafroid ain't playing the Open...his doping is taking long than planned.
marmar
(77,091 posts)..... Rafa isn't playing.
joeybee12
(56,177 posts)If he keeps his head on straight he can win it...of course, sometimes someone comes along and gets on a hot streak, like Del Potro did in '09, but no one seems to be doing that this year.
