Derek Jeter to Serve as Honorary DH for Game 7 of Royals-Giants World Series
MLB commissioner Bud Selig announced this morning that now-retired Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will serve as the designated hitter for both the Royals and Giants in Game 7 of the World Series.
Its a fitting end to Dereks final season to have him involved in the final game of the season, Selig said in a statement. Both teams pushed this to a Game 7, no doubt wanting to make Dereks final season last as long as possible, and I want to reward them and baseball fans all across the world with one final Derek Jeter game.
Jeter will bat second and play DH for both the Royals and Giants, and each of his at-bats will be preceded by a special gift presentation. The Yankees legend said he did not expect one more game.
I thought my career was over, but Im really honored by this opportunity, said Jeter. Im not the kind of guy to seek out these sort of things or special ceremonies or year-long retirement tours or commemorative shoes with all of my accomplishments printed all over them or fawning words written with my number in the place of letters. But it would simply be selfish to turn them down. So tonight Ill be playing for the Royals and Giants in the biggest baseball game of the year. Its special.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy did not seem overly pleased with Seligs decision.
At least the Royals have to have him in their lineup, too, said Bochy. And thank God we dont have to put him at shortstop.
Game 7 of the Giant2-Royal2 World 2erie2 is tonight at 8:07 p.m. ET.
