On Monday, (49ers owner Jed) York said the 49ers arent seeking to win the press conference with their new coach. And its certainly unlikely the hire will generate the same excitement that Harbaughs inspired in 2011.
The 49ers , however, will interview a colorful personality known for his defensive chops. Next week, they will speak with Rex Ryan, 52, the former Jets head coach who was fired Monday after New Yorks 4-12 season, the New York Daily News reported.
After leading the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship Games to open his six-year tenure in New York, Ryan finished with a 26-38 record in four non-playoff seasons.
On Tuesday morning, the 49ers interviewed their defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, 56, who worked with Ryan on the Ravens defensive staff from 2006-08. They also interviewed Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, 44, on Tuesday night in Seattle, Fox Sports reported.

(29,322 posts)I don't know anything about Vic Fangio. Dan Quinn looks appealing but Rex Ryan had a similar looking resume before becoming head coach.
Kyle Shannahan - I don't think you want him. Adam Gase (is he the OC or is it Peyton Manning?). Josh McDaniels - Seems to be one of the best offensive coaches but had less success than Rex Ryan as a head coach. Also puts the 49ers at risk for a videotaping scandal.
Todd Bowles - defensive tackles will love playing for him but his defenses has a tendency to underachieve. Also, Rex Ryan is a better a defensive coach. Jim Tomsula - don't know him.
Geno Smith has a 6.8 YPA career, 25-34 TD-INT. Mark Sanchez 6.67 YPA 80-82 TD-INT. Kaepernick has a 7.53 YPA, 50-21 TD-INT. Obviously a much better situation at QB over there. Players tend to love and respect him so you wouldn't have to worry about them playing hard for him.
If I was the 49ers, I'd wait until the Ravens season is over and go for Kubiak. I noticed a big change in the Broncos offense after he left, Shannahan got the credit for plugging in any running back and watch him go for over 1,000 yards but it was really Kubiak after Steve Slaton, Arian Foster, and Ben Tate. Now Justin Forsett has 5.4 YPC under him. The running game isn't the only thing he is good at, he's probably the best out there today in West Coast QB manipulation, play-actions and bootlegs. Jake Plummer was one person who missed Kubiak more than anybody (he'll tell you, too) when he left to coach the Texans after the 2005 season.
Kubiak boosts Ravens' offense
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) The improvement of the Baltimore Ravens' offense under Gary Kubiak can be measured by a variety of statistics, including Justin Forsett's 1,147 yards rushing and Joe Flacco's career-high tying 25 touchdown passes.
To focus solely on those numbers would be missing the point, or rather, the points. The Ravens have scored 389 points this season, and with 10 more on Sunday against Cleveland they will set a franchise record.
"We'll break that," said fourth-year wide receiver Torrey Smith, whose 10 touchdown catches are the most of his career.
<snip>
He took over an offense that last season totaled 1,328 yards rushing with an average of 3.1 yards per attempt. He inherited a quarterback, Joe Flacco, who was sacked 48 times and had 22 interceptions compared to 19 touchdown passes.
Kubiak tore down the system and started anew. The results have been impressive, if not downright amazing, given that Ray Rice never got a carry and the offensive line has been repeatedly shuffled because of injuries.
Forsett, who never before gained more than 619 yards, could end up doubling that. He is averaging an NFL-best 5.3 yards per carry, one reason why Baltimore has garnered 1,890 yards on the ground and averages 4.5 yards per attempt.

And Flacco? He's been sacked only 18 times, has more than twice as many TD throws than interceptions (25-12) and needs 326 yards passing Sunday to reach the 4,000-mark for the first time.
All this can be attributed primarily to Kubiak.
"I think his biggest asset is he's a great teacher," Smith said Wednesday. "He's been successful everywhere he's been, and it's been no different here. Being in meetings with him, he's fun, a guy you want to play for. Everyone kind of bought into his system. He's obviously doing a great job."
<snip>
"Mainly, he cares. He cares about the players, on and off the field. When you have a guy like that, it just makes you want to play for him even more."
