From TDN:
Al Shaqab Racings TDN Rising Star Khozan (Distorted Humor--Delta Princess, by A.P. Indy), undefeated in two career appearances, including a 12 3/4-length allowance victory going Gulfstreams one-turn mile Feb. 22 (video), has been ruled off the Kentucky Derby trail after suffering an injury to his right hind ankle, according to Bradley Weisbord, Al Shaqabs U.S. racing advisor. The $1-million Fasig-Tipton Florida March graduate will be sent to Kentucky to be evaluated by Dr. Larry Bramlage, Weisbord said.
"I feel for the Al Shaqab team and Sheikh Joaan." said Khozan's trainer Todd Pletcher. "It looked like Khozan could have taken them to the Kentucky Derby in only their first year of ownership in America. He was on target to be one of the favorites for the GI Florida Derby in three weeks, and ticks all the boxes with his brilliance, pedigree, and demeanor. I hope to have him back for a summer campaign. He is special."
Khozan, a half-brother to fellow TDN Rising Stars three-time champion Royal Delta (Empire Maker), GISW Crown Queen (Smart Strike), GISP Carnival Court (Street Sense) and GSP Empire Way (Empire Maker), was sent off the 19-10 favorite for his seven-furlong debut at Gulfstream Jan. 24, and, despite drawing widest in a 14-horse field, stayed on beautifully to score by 3 3/4-lengths (video). Instead of taking on the likes of Upstart (Flatter) in the GII Besilu Stables Fountain of Youth S. one day prior, Khozan was the prohibitive 1-20 chalk for the aforementioned one-mile allowance and sat a stalking trip before outclassing five other rivals.
Bred in Kentucky by Adena Springs, Khozan fetched $350,000 as a Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling and breezed an eighth of a mile in 4/5 ahead of last years Fasig-Tipton Florida sale before being knocked down for the seven-figure pricetag to rank as the second highest-priced offering at the sale.
