CLEVELAND -- Fans inside Progressive Field held their breath on Tuesday after Carlos Carrasco went down hard on the mound after being hit by a line drive off the bat of White Sox outfielder Melky Cabrera. The severity of Carrasco's injury was not immediately known.
With no outs in the first inning, an 86-mph pitch from Carrasco was sent back up the middle sharply. The pitcher raised his hands in defense of the line drive and the baseball appeared to glance off his hands before striking him in the right side of the face. Carrasco immediately dropped to the ground, where he remained face down until manager Terry Francona and members of the medical staff ran to his aid.
After a few minutes, Carrasco was helped onto a medical cart and taken off the field. The pitcher pressed a hand to the left side of his face and looked down as he was removed from the game. The severity of Carrasco's injury was not immediately known.
