Jets quarterback Geno Smith will miss 6-10 weeks with a broken jaw after being "cold-cocked" by teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali in the locker room on Tuesday.
Jets head coach Todd Bowles made the stunning announcement before practice Tuesday afternoon.
Enemkpali, a 2014 sixth-round pick by former Jets general manager John Idzik, has been released.

ESPN:Three years ago, Ik Enemkpali...was only 19, coming off a promising redshirt freshman year at Louisiana Tech...There was a bar fight shortly after 1AM, and Enemkpali ended up striking an off-duty, undercover police officer who was working security at the bar...
Enemkpali (pronounced: IN-em-PALL-ee) lost his temper in a bad way. A uniformed officer arrived on the scene and used pepper spray on him, but that didn't subdue him. Finally, the officer stunned Enemkpali with a Taser, reports said...
In the months leading up to the most recent NFL draft, Enemkpali was grilled about the incident by every team that interviewed him, including the New York Jets...
Another candidate for my "Next Aaron Hernandez" award...

at Enemkpali's charity football camp. Geno didn't show due to a family fatality, but had promised reimbursement of the plane ticket Enemkpali paid for.

(78,249 posts)The punch, which broke Smith's jaw and will put him out six to 10 weeks, was over a $600 plane ticket Enemkpali bought Smith to attend his football camp on July 11 at Pfugerville High School in Pfugerville, Texas, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. Days before the camp a person close to Smith died in a motorcycle accident, and Smith didn't attend. Enemkpali asked Smith to reimburse the money, and Smith said he would but never did, Schefter reported. Tuesday's incident was over Enemkpali confronting Smith over that $600 according to Schefter.
How much more than that did Enemkpali blow?!

(44,577 posts)So fair, in fact, that I'm getting a feeling that there's even more to the story.
Six hundred dollars is pocket change to a starting quarterback, payable out of two or three of his paychecks at worst. Either Enemkpali didn't feel he was properly apologized to, he took offense at something he'd heard Geno had said -- or Geno was hired for pocket change and needed the money more than anyone knows.

(16,113 posts)The Jets just caught a lucky break, no pun intended. Smith is not good and based on the comments supposedly coming from the locker room, it doesn't sound like he's much of a leader either.

I don't have a problem with him cancelling if a fatality was involved. But if Smith couldn't repay IK right away, the least he could have done was work out an installment plan!
Woody Allen once said that "eighty percent of success is just showing up." I've come to believe that ninety-five percent of successful leadership is just being depended upon to do the right thing.

USA Today:The Buffalo Bills have claimed Ikemefuna Enemkpali off of waivers from the New York Jets after the linebacker was released for breaking quarterback Geno Smith's jaw with a punch in the team's locker room, a person familiar with the transaction said Wednesday.
Enemkpali could face discipline from the NFL under its personal conduct policy. An NFL spokesman said Wednesday that the league is reviewing the situation. Any...team interested in signing Enemkpali...might have to weigh a possible suspension. Enemkpali...could also face legal charges if Smith pursues them.
That means he'll be back under Rex Ryan's wing, right?

It became about the fact that Geno wasnt necessarily apologetic and being in a way remorseful about the money when saying he was going to pay IK back and he didnt. He was rather smug about it.
Which explains why no criminal charges were filed, and why IK was cut rather than banned or suspended.
Smith could be active for Sundays game against Philadelphia as the backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick...with the 2-0 Jets playing well...
How's it feel, fucker -- NOW you can say that you've been cold-cocked!!! As for you, Enemkpali, welcome to the "Next Aaron Hernandez Award" list!
