I think it is common knowledge that Selig was an idiot but a one game playoff after a 162 game season takes the cake. Think of 1951 and 1962 3 game playoffs were the norm. Baseball always has series during the year so why not a 3 game series for the wild card. One game playoffs are associated with football were almost everyone plays but in baseball there are more than one pitcher. Selig- the worst I have ever seen.

(4,286 posts)I have mixed feelings. The wild card game was designed to keep more teams alive to make the playoffs during the regular season. It achieved that goal at the expense of somewhat perverting the playoffs with a contrived one game series where everything depends on the starting pitcher for that one game.
I would prefer to see a 2 of 3 series like the old playoff system we had when we had only the World Series and a 3 game playoff was used to break a league tie. Each team at least got one home game. Remember the great playoff between the Dodgers and Giants in 1962?

(32,080 posts)And, and they earned better than that, as well. There's something wrong when the teams with the second and third best records in baseball have to go through a wild card game to even get into the post season beyond that one game. I have no idea how to fix that, however.

(65,010 posts)Play more intra-league games with the other two divisions. The 4th and 5th best records play the play-in game. The NL Central had more wins combined than any other division. If the schedule was more balanced, the Mets and Dodgers probably would have ended up 4th and 5th like they already did. Then those two would play the play in game and at least the best 3 teams would be in the NLDS.

(21,742 posts)Baseball is comprised of 3 game series all season long.
The playoffs should be the same.

(65,010 posts)But, last year the Giants weren't better than the Cardinals but they had the pitcher on a roll. The Cubs had that this year, but they were pretty even for the whole year.

(64,931 posts)one team came in with a red hot pitcher and completely buzz-sawed the opposing team. You could have a quick three game series and start the division playoffs on Friday.

Face it. That so-called championship is tainted. Just like 2000.
