ISS astronaut throws longest ever football pass (well, sort of)

Feb. 4 (UPI) -- NASA astronauts are claiming to have set a new record for the longest football pass in history, but chances are it won't make the cut for Guinness World Records. It seems the lack of gravity played a huge role.

Astronaut Tim Kopra, aboard the International Space Station, tossed the pigskin for 564,664 yards. Considering the station is moving at 17,500 mph, the ball traveled at 8,800 seconds per yard yards per second.

Since the big game is happening in Houston, home of the Johnson Space Center, NASA has been adding its name to pre- and post-game festivities, which includes a virtual reality roller coaster called Future Flight that simulates a Mars landing.

Kopra returned home from the ISS in June, but NASA released the footage Saturday, ahead of Super Bowl 51 on Sunday.
