Will he land somewhere else in the bigs, or is this the end of the line?
"The Boston Red Sox announced Friday that they have designated third baseman Pablo Sandoval for assignment.
Sandoval, 30, slashed .212/269/.354 with four home runs and 12 RBI through his first 32 appearances this season.
The Red Sox signed Sandoval to five-year, $95 million contract in 2015 after he earned two All-Star nods over the course of seven seasons with the San Francisco Giants, but his abbreviated stint in Boston was marred by injuries, subpar production and concerns about his weight.
After Sandoval batted .245 with 10 home runs and 47 RBI in 2015, he was limited to three games in 2016 after he was forced to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery."

Pablo Sandovals return to the San Francisco Giants comes too late to turn around an awful 2017 season. But Californias budget likely will benefit.
A big-bucks deal with the Boston Red Sox after the 2014 season stood to save the 2012 World Series MVP as much as $7.6 million over re-signing with the Giants because of Massachusetts flat personal income tax rate of 5.2 percent and income tax policies in other states where Sandoval would play as a member of the Red Sox squad.
Now that Boston has cut ties with the underperforming Panda yet will continue to pay him an estimated $87,500 a game Sandoval is back with the organization where he got his start. Hell also potentially be playing far more games in a state where the marginal income tax rate tops out at 12.3 percent, plus an additional 1 percent on taxable income above $1 million.
Under California income tax law, a professional athlete is taxed based on how many games he or she plays in the state. The number of California duty days is divided by the total number of duty days. That ratio is multiplied by the athletes total compensation.
If Sandoval is called up to the big club by Aug. 1, 37 of the Giants remaining 55 games will be in California. Eighteen will be in other states, including three in Florida (where there is no income tax), three in Colorado (where income is taxed at a flat 4.63 percent) and six in Arizona (where the top rate is 4.54 percent.)

(36,421 posts)Giants reportedly considering reunion with Pablo Sandoval, who sounds all for it
Hands down, Pablo Sandoval's five-year contract with the Red Sox will go down as one of the worst free-agent signings in baseball history. Boston will end up paying him $95 million to hit .237/.286/.360 (71 OPS+) with minus-2.0 WAR in 161 games. Ouch.
The Red Sox officially cut ties with Sandoval on Friday -- they still owe him the remainder of his contract, which runs through 2019 -- and at some point soon he will become a free agent able to sign with any team for the pro-rated portion of the league minimum. He just has to clear waivers first, which will definitely happen. No one is taking on that contract.
What's next for Sandoval? Well, how about a return to the Giants? Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports says Kung-Fu Panda would love to return to San Francisco, and the Giants have kicked around the possibility.
From Heyman:
People close to Sandoval say he would "love" to go back to the Giants, no matter what he said shortly after he exited San Francisco, where he had some memorably-spectacular October moments and also a few rocky times, as well.
As for the Giants, word is that some Giants people have spoken behind the scenes about the possibility, and they suggest it could be a consideration though officially, they aren't talking about it. Asked Saturday about a possible Panda reunion, Giants GM Bobby Evans would only say, "I can't get into speculation one way or other on a player under contract elsewhere."

I'm kinda indifferent to the possibility of his return, and I hear his fielding has deteriorated more than his stick, but he can be entertaining to watch. That is if they can get him on the cheap.

(31,167 posts)DL, I know. But he'll back next year. And I think they'd choose Jae-gyun Hwang and Conor Gillaspie over Sandoval. Only remote possibility is if Nunez and Hwang or Gillaspie are traded by the deadline. But even then I'd highly doubt it.
Put me down as a big fat NO! I'm done with Sandoval.
Brother Buzz
(36,421 posts)Jae-gyun Hwang just ain't up to speed yet, Gillaspie has been sort of iffy, and Nuñez may get traded (by all accounts, he's on the short list). Like I said upthread, if they can get get him on the cheap, he would be decent backup, but I see him mostly being used as a power right-handed pinch hitter, something the Giants desperately need.
Sacramento would totally embrace him if he spent some time tuning up with the Triple-A River Cats. Hell, he might even shed some weight in the heat.
Auggie
(31,167 posts)just to get the best possible look at both of them this year. Might as well use the rest of 2017 to help set-up 2018.

(36,421 posts)Meanwhile, Bochy is running Núñez around the block a few times, and likes what he's seeing of late.
I'm curious to see how all these trade rumors shake out before the 31st. I'm also curious to see if my fucking Giants can claw their way out of the damn cellar, too. Getting beaten up by the Padres is embarrassing.

He'll be playing in Sacramento for the River Cats. Panaderia La Purisima is, like, a mile away from Raley Field, but I understand the River Cats have some tough food minders; game on!

On Edit: It' been reported they did got him on the cheap, although I haven't seen any numbers yet.

(17,303 posts)you'll gladly chip in a few bucks to ensure he sticks around, eh Brother Buzz?
Brother Buzz
(36,421 posts)If I was a betting man, I'd wager there is a big ass weight clause in his contract. If he sheds forty pounds, and keeps it off, he could become a decent baseball player again.
Bochy likes him. Me, I'm still indifferent.
True Dough
(17,303 posts)He came into this season in noticeably better shape but he wasn't performing well on the field. If he can turn things around by next season, he might be okay. Beyond that, I wouldn't hold out much hope.
Brother Buzz
(36,421 posts)then he'd start gaining weight after opening day. Hell, it got so bad, the Giants management ordered the hotel kitchens to stop delivering food to him. I suspect part of his weight clause includes a full time food minder, which would be a daunting task.
5'11" - 255 pounds, Pablo, meet the Sacramento heat. Do you think Subway would be willing to make him a project?
Auggie
(31,167 posts)But Pablo? That's scraping the bottom of the barrel.

(36,421 posts)It appears to be a sellers market for third basemen this year. Oh, and don't leave Nuñez out of the mix; he may have a hot stick right now, but he's been making some sloppy boneheaded mistakes on the field.
Auggie
(31,167 posts)I expect him gone as long as he stays healthy.
Brother Buzz
(36,421 posts)Hwang has been in a major slump (2 for 25). Hwang no longer has the ability to opt out of his contract after being called up, but the Giants are expected to give him that courtesy if he is so inclined. He may or may not report to Sacramento, what with Sandoval, the usurper, reporting to the River Cats on Tuesday. For now, Hwang remains on the 40-man roster. Weird.
Think there is another team willing to give him a try?
Auggie
(31,167 posts)He was sent down, BTW. Maybe someone picks him up. My guess is he was really pressing it and might have lost his swing.
Brother Buzz
(36,421 posts)Jae-Gyun Hwang is playing second fiddle to Sandovol.
Sandoval looks to be fast tracked back to the Giants. He's already playing Double A ball in San Jose with favorable reports, and he moves to Sacramento on Tuesday. Say what you want about him, but Bochy really likes Sandoval.
Here's my in your face pipe dream: The Red Sox sign Hwang, then everything starts clicking for him and the Red Sox go on to knock the Astros out of the American League playoffs when Hwang tags an extra-inning walk-off home run.

(36,421 posts)The Giants traded their third baseman to Boston, who needed to fill the hole left by Pablo Sandoval. The circle of life!
The Giants kicked off the 2017 trade season a few days early, dealing Eduardo Nuñez to the Boston Red Sox for two minor-league pitchers.
History will remember the Eduardo Nuñez era as a tough one for the Giants, who have been baseballs worst team since he arrived. Fans will remember Nuñez as a fun player who did good things with a batting helmet that was two sizes too large. He was one of the better parts of the 2017 season, and I will miss him.
On the other hand: gimme all the pitching prospects.
But Nuñez was a pending free agent, and he was one of the few players the Giants had with trade value, so it was always likely that he would be traded. Its possible the Giants might even try to re-sign him after the season, albeit unlikely.
Ill update the post with the names of the pitchers, but Im assuming theyre two of the very best pitching prospects the Red Sox had. Or not. Either way, we have our first deal of the deadline, and it was the one the Giants absolutely had to make.
Also, when we get the names of the pitchers, its absolutely essential that we refer to the trade as:
Eduardo Nuñez
for
Minor league pitcher
