Gibson, widely considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time, was diagnosed with cancer several weeks ago, his longtime agent, Dick Zitzmann, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
Zitzmann told the newspaper that he has spoken to Gibson and that chemotherapy is expected to begin Monday in Omaha, Nebraska, the pitcher's hometown. Gibson, who turns 84 in November, has been hospitalized in Omaha for the past two weeks.
Gibson went 22-9 and led the majors in ERA (1.12), shutouts (13) and strikeouts (268) in 1968 for the St. Louis Cardinals. The year before, he went the distance in three games, all wins, and St. Louis beat the Boston Red Sox in seven games in an epic World Series.

Thank you, Bob Gibson for the enjoyment you gave me.
One of the more famous Gibson stories:
Gibby was being interviewed on TV. The interview was talking about Gibson's reputation for throwing brush back pitches if a batter crowded the plate. The interviewer said "Some people say you'd throw at your grandmother." Gibby responded "If she was digging in."

(29,149 posts)52 years ago, almost to the day actually (July 15, 1967) -- the team physician said he "has a high threshold for pain." He probably would have kept pitching longer, too, but the leg snapped the rest of the way.
So he broke his leg on July 15, and he was pitching again by the first week in September. He had three complete game wins in the World Series, including a three-hit shutout in Game 7.

I sure wish him luck in this latest challenge.
