Most of the spotlight is always on the skill positions. Mostly I agree.
RB's Jim Brown - Herschel | Bo - Archie Griffin ... only four spots so I guess Earl Campbell got left out. WR's Rice - Larry Fitzgerald | Randy Moss - Biletnikoff...... mmm I saw Moss play several times and he was well there are no words. Seems like Rice made it on his pro career because the scouts might have known about him but no one else really did. Biletnikoff seems like a nostalgia pick.
All purpose - Johnny Rodgers | Tim Brown. I'd say Tim Brown was one of the best I ever saw on TV. I'd put him as WR.
QB's. Staubach | Peyton's Manning. Roger seems like a nostalgia pick. Manning? He never won a big game and his record against Florida was the subject of jokes. I know they aren't going to put him on the list but Michael Vick was, to me, the epitome of a college game QB. Run and pass. For all the Tech history under Beamer, Vick is the only one who got them to a championship game.
Deion, Woodson, and Ronnie Lott were always going to be on the list. Nice to see Norfolk's Kenny Easley on the list.

(182,791 posts)We watched it with our 14 year old daughter a few days ago. She was amazed that THAT was on TV once.

(42 posts)But college football is more of a regional sport, so my preferences are based on who I saw. OJ was the best, QBs couldve been Gary Beban from UCLA or Warren Moon from Washington. Ronnie Lott was the best DB, but I also saw Willie Buchanan at San Diego St, who couldnt be thrown on in College and went on to a great career with the Packers.
Like I said, its Regional depending on where you saw your college football.

(182,791 posts)Yeah. No USC running backs is a bit hard to believe given their history but there are only 4 spots.
Marcus was smooth as silk. Charles White literally broke my heart on what seems like a ridiculous notion these days - a running game 2 minute drill (1980 Rose Bowl).
Don James Huskies program was mythical. We never saw them play here on the east coast other than bowl games. They were a force.
Funny on the regional thing - Other than Ped State, Boston College, and Syracuse (sportscasters breeding ground) football the northeastern I95 corridor area is a void north of Maryland and East of Ohio. Ok, there's Pitt.

(54,770 posts)Nowadays, so many players are specialized, like someone who only plays on 3rd and less than 3.

(42 posts)Called a One Platoon System. This was the rule until 1964.
I also remember the single wing offense. UCLA was one of the last teams to run it.

(54,770 posts)coaches punting regularly on 3rd down in case something went wrong with the punt.
My favorite player, Billy Lothridge of Ga Tech, quarterbacked, played safety, punted, and occasionally placekicked.
But, later we had athletes like Deion Sanders or Bo Jackson who were great athletes in several sports. So thats cool too.

(29,322 posts)He scored a TD in pretty much every game his Heisman finalist season.
Randy Moss was also the best college receiver because he leaped over people. He had so much athleticism.

(64,931 posts)To those who played four years and had four good/great years. And how do compare someone who was great during college and was a failure at the next level (i.e. Ryan Leaf, Matt Leinhart, etc). There was the running back at Ohio State who won a championship in the early 2000s who spent the next few years in jail.
Its damn near impossible other than for arguments sake to determine who was the best. I cant do it.
BTW, I remember when you announced the birth of your now 14 year old daughter on DU! Didnt Skinnner and his wife have a child about the same time? Swedish fish for everyone!

(182,791 posts)An unbelievable season and a game no one has ever had. The same can be said for Steve McNair at a small school but his was for several years.
